  1. Hello fellow bikehubbers. So awhile back I was extremely fortunate to win the Oakley x Ubuntu Bikes competition sponsored by The Lake Magazine. I was ecstatic, and still am. The bike is a beauty in it's own right. The only thing is the bike is made from a mixture of parts, and most likely more of a collector's item than a full-on fixie. I have ridden it more than a few times, but I am quite afraid to switch from freewheel to the fixed gear considering the parts and a chance of something breaking. I can only seem to find the name of three parts which is the crank and chainring both are Suntour SR and the hubs are Shimano. I would just want to know what I could get for this bike, because I am considering to buy a more purpose built fixie. TIA, Oscar The bike: http://www.ubuntubikes.com/lake-magazine-x-oakley-fixie-colloaboration/

  4. Hi, I bought a road bike with Shimano 105 components and an 12-28 rear cassette. I have found that the 12 tooth does not give me a high enough speed and want to replace it with an 11 tooth gear. All the bike shops I have been to want to sell me a complete cassette with an 11 tooth gear but not just the 11 tooth gear itself. There is virtually no wear on the cassette and it makes no sense to replace the complete cassette. Is there anywhere I can get just the 11 tooth gear for the 10 speed Shimano 105? Or do I have to replace the complete cassette? All advice appreciated. Denis

  6. I'm fixing up a bike with Shimano Ultegra Flight Deck ST-6501 shifters. The hoods are stretched and sticky. Sies. I've scoured the Internet for replacements but with no luck. Any suggestions? Are any other hood models compatible with the ST-6501 shifters?
  7. What sort of life do you get out of your components? Chain, Chainrings, Cassette, Blades? Would be interesting to see if one brand gets more kilometres / hours than the other. Do cheaper, heavier components last longer? Does anyone even measure their bike maintenance or just replace components when necessary? I usually get around 1200km out of a XX1 chain. 11 000km on a X01 cassette and still riding fine.
  8. I've got a Cannondale Rush 1 with 38 / 24 chain rings up front and an 11 / 36 cassette. I'd like to go slightly bigger up front, maybe 40 /26. The bike has a Deore Hollowtech crank. Will this work? Common sense says that I would just need to life the front derailleur a bit, but common sense has it's limitations.... Any suggestions? The guy at Chris Willemse Cycles told me I'm stuck with a 38 up front and an 11 at the back as my best ratio - or I need to buy a road bike!

  10. So I bought a set of M675 SLX brakes after reading rave reviews about them. I have been very impressed with them, they are easy to use, have great stopping power and fit well with my XT 1x11 setup. I have the option to pt on some Sram Guide RS brakes. Why? Because I can. I ride mostly enduro type riding, so a lot of downhill and technical type stuff. I am led to believe the Guides have better feel/modulation to them and they are just as powerful as the SLX. The main difference is the brake fluid being used between the 2. My main reason for considering the change is heat build up and brake fade when things get hot. Does anyone here have experience with these 2 setups and can comment on which is the better for enduro?
  11. Seems like WiggleCRC are spreading the net wider and have reportedly bought up rivals Bike24. With CRC already not shipping certain brand overseas and Wiggle following suit the number of different retailers for direct purchase / shipping available to SA is shrinking. http://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/latest-news/wigglecrc-acquires-german-rival-bike24-reported-100m-move-356123
  12. Hi Hubbers Don't miss out on our goupsets specials today only!! 1. SRAM Eagle GXP 12 speed Groupset. RRP R8995 now only R6995!!! https://www.evobikes.co.za/sram-gx-eagle-groupset-175mm-1x12.html
  13. Hi Everyone I have a question. Would a pedal that is pretty much identical to a Shimano XT pedal sell? The info: 10 grams heavier, sealed bearings over the loose ball bearings in xt's. They will retail around R500 cheaper then the Shimano XT pedals. The pedals will come with a 6 month warranty. What does everyone think?
  14. Hey Guys First thread on here so take it easy on me haha... I have a Cannondale Trail 29 Hardtail. Used to ride a bit of DH at varsity (I sucked, good at crashing though.) and then focused on paddling and running the last 8-10 years. I decided to get back onto a bike cos it's fun and you can do such a cool mix of long explorey days and cool techy trail rides. Anyway, I bought my budget Cannondale Hardtail with tubeless done and the front derailleur removed by the previous owner as he was just using it to keep miles off his fancy bike for beachfront rides etc. I got it for R 9 500 only a year old in immaculate shape. So its 1x10 SLX and has the Shimano branded but no specific name (SLX / Deore etc) brakes. I manage 95% of the time with the 1x10 as he put on a 40t big cog - spin out on the downs obviously but that's fine. 34t chainring. I've done close to 100km days pretty comfortably and I manage most of the steep tech stuff ok too. I think that 1x11 would obviously be better if I want to do some stage / longer 1 day races. The brakes are also adequate but not much more than that. What sort of price would I be able to pick up a SLX 11 speed rear derailleur and cassette and some better brakes? Happy to trawl the used section of the hub until I can find something! I've put on wider Ritchey bars and a shorter (50mm) stem as it's a large and I'm probably in between M and L frames. Do you think it's worthwhile? I'm happy and comfortable on my bike and riding some pretty decent distances / speeds and technical stuff so don't feel the need to go full sus any time soon due to extra cost and service requirements etc.
  15. Hello Hubbers, I've been looking through the forums and can't seem to find a definitive answer to the problems I face. Sooo... Firstly Shoes... I have a budget of 2k for my shoes. I would really like something that has the boa system because i think its frikken awesome but please let me know if its any good. So basically what is a good shoe in the 2k range? Should I get something like a first ascent torque 2 or an flr f55 or something shimano... or should I save up and get the Specialized Expert? Have also seen the Fizik m5 boa, those are also cool, but again is it the best in this price range. I am leaning toward the Giro Cylinder because it has get boa system and it looks pretty awesome, but are the shoes good? So basically I'm just trying to find out whats a good brand to go with for quality and value for the money that I end up spending. Also, where are the good shops in Johannesburg that I can shop at for good deals? Secondly pedals, I want to ride trail as well as start doing some good distance on the road... I want to go clipless and I have found pedals for sale on the hub that I will get... I just want to know which is better between the Shimano m520 and the m530... Is the extra cage on the 530 better? Thank you, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Apologies for the essay

  17. Hi Guys, I should start by saying that until this weekend, I haven't been on a bike in about 13 years (since school days) when a Raleigh M-Trax was the coolest thing around, so please forgive me if my knowledge is a little limited and perhaps leads to me asking dumb questions. I promise I'm a quick learner A good friend of mine gave me a GT Avalanche 0.0 (I know, old as balls) to get back in the swing of things, and ever since he told me that I'll be getting it, I've been looking at what it's got, and what I might like to change. The first of these would be replacing the current v-brakes with some entry level disk brakes. The frame and hubs are good to go in terms of fitment possibilities (shimano hubs with 6x bolt fitment), but my question pertains to the brake levers currently on the bike, and how replacing these will affect the fitment of my existing shifters. From what I could see, the existing shifters are fitted to the brake levers, which in turn are fitted to the bar. The nature of this fitting is still foreign to me, as is whether, and if and if so, which hydraulic lever will enable me to maintain this fitting? The Deore range is pretty vast in terms of models, and I have no idea what to look for in terms of being able to retain my existing shifters. I realize that the bike is worth about R4.65 and fitting anything other than a smiley face sticker to it might be overcapitalizing, seeing as Gumtree is rife with second hand bikes with disc brakes fitted for less than the average disc brake kit, but I'm just exploring the possibility in the hopes that someone rips their stock brakes off to upgrade, and then sells it to me for a steal Thanks, and have a good one!
  18. Hubbers, Have an interesting situation, about a month ago my Di 2 battery started draining overnight, whereas before I could ride for 3 months before needing recharge. Got to the point where it drained completely from fully charge overnight. Took it to my LBS and after 2 weeks just replaced the battery and all sorted. Then the next issue appeared, on my first ride back after the battery replacement I noticed moisture in the DI2 display screen, no issues though, a week later I go for a ride and the system starts to change gears on its own...from granny to big ring going uphill...loads of fun with tired legs and there is nothing you can do about it except stop and try to shift the gears to a more appropriate gear setting. Took the bike back to LBS, off course the answer is there is moisture in the system which short circuit the computer and causes it to reset and results in gear changes. This after only 11 months of owning the system and being advised this is not a warranty issue but my negligence...pay up and smile. The answer from Shimano, you shouldn't get water onto your DI2 display...this is a MTB after all. This is one of the better systems to change gears with precision in wet, muddy conditions after all, or at least that is the sales pitch Been riding with my Garmin for the last 8 years, through all sorts of conditions and never had this problem, it just keeps going. So be warned, if you are going to ride in rainy conditions. Anyone else had the same problem?
  19. Hi everyone, I've got Avid Elixir CR brakes that combined with Sram X7 shifters. I've converted to 1 x 10 and want to replace the rear shifter with a Shimano SLX. But there's an issue with not being able to use my existing clamp. Apparently they're not so easy to get hold of either. Does anyone know where I can find one? Thanks Pic just shows current clamp with sram x7 shifter.
  20. Hello all, Been curious for a while about these rotors, more specific the SM-RT99 model. Basically just want to know are these rotors better than the ones on my bike (SM-RT64 CL rotors)? I see both are center lock discs. I read that the Ice-Tech rotors handle heat better while braking, 20% better that, and that, but is it really that good or is it only marketing? Also, would it be a worthy upgrade over my current rotors? Thanks. ~ André
  21. Following the market availability of Dura-Ace R9100-series Di2 components, Shimano has released the latest version of its E-TUBE Di2 programming app for Android and IOS platforms. This new technology allows users to customise Di2 functions wirelessly through Bluetooth-enabled tablets and mobile devices. Click here to view the article
  22. Hope there is some hubbers that can assist with this issue of setting up a Shimano 11 Speed Front derailleur. I recently bought a brand new 11 speed 105 groupset (Excluding crankset, as I have a BB30 Carbon FSA crank) The issue is that I can simply can't get the FD setup properly. When FD is setup so that the chain does not rub against the FD while in big chainring and 2nd sprocket from the top, the chain will rub against the FD when I'm in the smallest sprocket, and vice-versa. I have setup the trim settings properly, but this still doesn't help. I built the same groupset onto my brothers bike (Italian import), no issues whatsoever and works like a charm. Only difference is that he has a braze on fitting as part of the frame, as opposed to my FD with normal bracket around seat tube. He also uses the 105 crankset as opposed to my FSA. I built the groupset onto my Cannondale Supersix. Added in-line barrel adjuster for fine tuning. Setup exactly as per Shimano instructions - No luck. I have taken this to 2 bike shops - no luck either. As always works fine on a bike stand, but when you actually ride it and the horizontal forces come into play it is a different story. From what I've managed to research there is no difference between FSA 10 speed / 11 speed cranksets. Any additional insight would be welcomed.
  23. So when changing brake disk pads again.. and I have reached the conclusion that Calipers have a dominant and a non dominant side ...and always seem to wear down one pad a lot quicker than the other (the dominant) So I was thinking of running a metal disk on the dominant and a resin disk on the non dominant sides. as i only thought of this after i took out the old worn pads i'll have to wait until the new ones wear down so i can make a note Although i would assume the piston on the hose banjo side probably responds a touch faster and does more work.
  24. Hey bikehub peeps I'm considering an upgrade, and wanted to pick y'all brains on what would be a fair price if I decided to sell my current bike. Raleigh Team full Carbon frame (2009 If I'm not mistaken?) with Dedaccia Carbon fork. Carbon Seat Post Shimano R500 Wheels Shimano 105 10 Speed Groupset. Size 54cm. CT based. It has a few minor scratches on it and needs a good clean, but otherwise looks good and works 100%. Seat & Bar wraps are starting to show wear. I've loved it despite the fact that its actually too small for me. I'm considering an upgrade to the correct size. This is the closest to a comparison that I can find online (although the components are a bit different, the frame is the same) https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/23481-raleigh-team-full-carbon-bargain/ Any input re:price would be appreciated!
