  1. Hi Everyone, Can anyone tell me more about these bikes? I have not been able to find much on them accept a Facebook page. I also can't see to find anything on the Hub, maybe I am just being blind. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Are they good bikes? Prices? Specs? Thanks!
  2. So, after much back and forth I settled into all but one component of my new wheel build. RIMS: CSIXX XCM 29er, 28h. Why: Wide but not too wide (26mm ID). Reasonable weight (430gr) for the width and thick and strong 3.5mm side walls. Knowing where they are from they will be well designed. And the maker is living nearby should something go wrong. With 30x30mm a stiff yet balanced cross-section. 3mm spokebed asymmetry for evening out spoke stress ratio. HUBS: AM Classic 28h. Why: Lightest hubs for a reasonable price (225gr + 130gr). Reliable, I put 7000km on a previous pair without a hitch. Strong free hub mechanics that are also easy to service. Off the shelf bearings, easy to service as well. Before it is commented on I am not bothered by the engagement. My second choice DT240 would have been the same without the expensive ratchet upgrade. At first I was a bit put off by what seemed to be a waste of hub flange width by the rather large gap between the NDS flange and the rotor lugs. The total flange to flange width that defines the ultimate wheel stiffness is 50mm. But looking at it more carefully I found that the loss of width is only between 2mm and 4mm compared to major other brands. Hope Pro4 has 52mm. DT has 53.9mm (3.8% less or 7.2% less). But the center-to-right and center-to-left offset is more balanced than with the other brands so the spoke tension is more equal. Adding the 3mm spokebed asymmetry of the rim the spoke tension ratio of the front wheel will be 93% and for the rear wheel 105% (greater spoke angle on the drive side, surprise!). That is pretty good and should ease the wheel build. And for both wheels the spokes are the same length for the DS and NDS. SPOKES: That is the remaining question. I already made the call to go for 28 instead of 32 spokes because of the stiff rim needing less support. Now the choice is between standard DB1.8/2.0 or bladed spokes rolled from DB1.5/2.0. I know the answer of every conservative wheelbuilder will be DB1.8/2.0 (after frowning dis-approvingly at the 28h). However CSIXX is building their own wheelsets with 28x DB1.5/2.0 spokes. 1.8/2.0 available on request. The wheelsets are not marketed around their weight. So in some way CSIXX must feel confident that this 28xDB1.5/2.0 is delivering a wheel build up to their standard. Contrary to that, as mentioned above, many wheelsbuilders strongly recommend against anything other 32x 1.8/2.0. Reliability issues are mentioned first, overall strength and stiffness second. Yesterday however I had the pleasure to 'touch' a 28x CXRay (effectively 1.5/2.0) ENVE/CKing wheel on a Scalpel. That wheel was stiffer than my already fantastic 32x 1.8/2.0 AC Wide lighting. So I would happily settle for that. So my spoke choices are right now: Standard DB1.8/2.0 or the Alpina DB1.5 offered by Rapide (similar to CXRay but cheaper). Obviously Brass nipples. Purpose of wheel: Cape Town style trail riding, mainly Tygerberg/Jonkers/TM. Local XCM races. Upcoming EPIC (so yes, reliability is important). I am 78kg. Bike is a full-sus RM Element. So I am interested not just in the standard recommendation to go for the bigger spoke for reliability, but some insight into the mechanical reasons behind and the actual real-life issues that might come up with the light bladed spoke in context with the stiff rims and the balanced spoke tension of the rim/hub setup. Does somebody has a DB1.5/2.0 MTB wheel and is happy/unhappy with it? Fire away
  3. Anyone have any info on these gold Rovals? Supposedly they're for Sagan's Venge disk bike but I haven't actually seen them on a bike. Hoping he pulls them out some time during the Tour Down Under. Either way, they look sexy as heck! http://cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2017/01/12/1/1_670.jpg
  4. Hey bikehub peeps I'm considering an upgrade, and wanted to pick y'all brains on what would be a fair price if I decided to sell my current bike. Raleigh Team full Carbon frame (2009 If I'm not mistaken?) with Dedaccia Carbon fork. Carbon Seat Post Shimano R500 Wheels Shimano 105 10 Speed Groupset. Size 54cm. CT based. It has a few minor scratches on it and needs a good clean, but otherwise looks good and works 100%. Seat & Bar wraps are starting to show wear. I've loved it despite the fact that its actually too small for me. I'm considering an upgrade to the correct size. This is the closest to a comparison that I can find online (although the components are a bit different, the frame is the same) https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/23481-raleigh-team-full-carbon-bargain/ Any input re:price would be appreciated!
  5. From what I've read it seems that it is not recommended that an ordinary hacksaw blade is used to cut carbon (steerer, seat post & bars), regardless of how fine the teeth are. It is recommended that an abrasive type blade is used to ensure a clean cut that does not cause the carbon strands to fray. I'd prefer to use a saw blade and cutting guide to ensure a straight and square cut for a carbon fork steerer. I've searched local hardware stores to speciality tool suppliers and nobody seems to stock these type of hack saw blades. Does anybody know where one can buy abrasive type hacksaw blades? Preferably in the Cape/Somerset West area. I found an abrasive hack saw blade on CRC for R160, which seems a little unreasonable (granted, it is a Park Tool product).
  6. Hallo I own a Scott hardtail and my back hurts when I ride on corrugated roads or long rocky sections. Someone said that a carbon seatpost would help a lot with this pain. My question to you is, what post would you recommend and what are the main things to look for in a post (e.g. Post flex or offset)
  7. I have a matt black carbon TT, what's the best polish to use on the bike?
  8. Hey Hubbers So, I am looking in buy a pair of OEM wheels but I have had very little experience with bringing in such a product. My biggest worries are tax and not receiving my product. Has anyone bought from Alibaba before? or is there a safer and faster website? I dont feel like waiting 6+ months for a product either! Thanks guys!
  9. Hi there, I'm currently in the market for a new wheelset, obvious choice would be a carbon set, but that is way to expensive. My options are: * Roval Alloy * American Classic Wide Lighting * ZTR Crest / Archex / Flowex American Classic Race Hope you guys can help.
  10. Hi All I need some help, I have a set of Carbon Tubular Rims with DT Swiss 240s hubs front and rear and Tufo Tubular tires. Hubs are both QR The wheels are extremely light(don't know the exact weight) I have no idea what these wheels are worth, can someone please help with a decent price for this? I am looking at buying a set of cane creek wheels and hubs, should i rather keep my carbon wheels or is it a good decision to go for the cane creeks tubeless rims? One of the reasons for thinking about changing to tubeless rims are that i would like to go slightly wider on the tires, at the moment I have 1.95's. I don't know if you can go any wider with tubular tires and what tubular tires cost. Tubeless tires are so much easier to find. Thanks in advance.
  11. I am looking at buying a carbon full suspension XC mountain bike and the two in my price range are the Giant Anthem X Advanced and the Camber Comp Carbon. The Giant has great components full XT while the Specialized also has excellent reviews. Any insights on which would be the better choice are appreciated?
  12. Howzit all, Can anyone point me in the direction of a thread regarding Chinese carbon road frames? Anyone had good/bad results with them? Looking to import into SA, currently have an office in China so we can easily source samples if anyone knows of a good factory. Many thanks all!! May your pedal strokes provide high wattage.....
  13. Hi, I am keen on buying a new handlebar and stem for my mountain bicycle. Any advice on what are good products? Carbon/not carbon? My goal with mountain biking is long rides with the occasional single track and rocky sections. I had a look at Ritchey, don't now the product that well. Any advice would be appreciated. I am tall, 1.93m. Regards, Brendan
  14. Hi All. I know this is another topic that has been discussed in depth, but with new stuff always hitting the market I need to know what is a good carbon road shoe to purchase ? Lets say a budget of about R3500 or so. I have large wide feet , so need something that will accommodate the width. Have not been around to try on anything yet, but was advised that the Shimano R321 - http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/products/road/018sh_r321.php?pSccontentsPro or R171 http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/gl/fw/products/road/019sh_r171.php?pSccontentsPro would be a good option to go, Shimano SA don't have stock of the R260. I want to buy something good the first time around that will last me a few years. What other options are available locally and who keeps a good range of shoes in the Durban area ? Thanks.
  15. Im upgrading my ALU bars to carbon, looking at the Easton EC90 SL bars. Curious to know if its possible to have bar ends installed on carbon handle bars? The bar ends that I currently use are Giant rubber cheapies Any hubbers out there tried this? Are there any other good quality brands to look at? (Looking forward to a Friday roasting )
  16. Hi guys (including Spec haters ), So I've had me 2015 Specialized Camber Comp Carbon for a few weeks now and really loving it but even as a newbie, one can't help getting all caught up in the "need to upgrade hype". Having said this, would you guys be able to help budget and plan the upgrades on my bike. 17. Hi Hubbers! I know this might be a k@k question or there has already been a thread like this but...... Can you spray or powdercoat a carbon mtb frame?
  18. Hi, I'm still riding a 5 year old Spez Epic Comp Carbon and now looking for something new. The 2016 models coming out now are above my budget, so after doing quite a bit of research, I've narrowed my search down to two bikes that's still available in 2015 models at quite good prices: The Scott Spark 930 or Giant Anthem Advanced Carbon (650b or 29). Would love to hear some opinions here. Does anyone have experience of both? I do mostly trail riding with the occasional longer distances and races like W2W, Houw Hoek, K2C, etc. I tried a friend's Scott 930 recently and loved it. Will also be taking out a demo of the Athem 650b this weekend to see how it compares.
  19. Hi. Tried searching the forum but cannot find much info. Just need some opinions on Token carbon wheels from those using it. Looking at a set in the classfieds - the C55 carbon, and wondering if it is a good set of wheels to go for?? Been looking at chinese carbon wheels which come in at like 10-12k so I would think these are a much better option to go for ? http://www.tokencycling.co.za/wheels/arsenal-c55-carbon-clincher-road-racing-tt-wheelset.html
  20. Morning everyone I would like to find out, I am fairly new at the whole road bike area of cycling and would like to find out if anyone has experience with carbon road wheelsets. What would be a great set and if it would be better to go for tubular or clincher? I know that there are carbon tubular sets our there that seem cheaper that the clinchers but also that tubular tyres are more costly. If I were to throw a hypothetical road race (say the 94.7) but would like to upgrade my wheels for the race and a few thereafter, in order to improve my time? What wheelset would you go for? Thanks a mill
  21. So a while back me and my dad decided to build a bike, after alot of speculation we agreed on a Carbon,duel-sus 29er with sram 2x10 parts. Thats where the hunt began and after a few weeks of crawling the hub and constantly refreshing the classifieds feed we finally got an amazing frame from a hubber (CraigK) He supplied the frame, fork , stem, bar and a seatpost clamp! Next up is wheels... I will upload pics of the parts as we get them and as the build takes shape.
  22. I'm looking at the dark horse mountain bike carbon 29" wheelset as an option but can't find any reviews. There are a few on their road wheelsets. Anyone have a set and can give me an opinion?
  23. A few years back, lets say about 10, my dad took up MTB'ing and he loved it, still does. It didn't take long for him to get hooked. A while thereafter he wanted my mother to join him in his cycling adventures and, needless to say, she was quite skeptical about doing something as ridiculous as whizzing about with a mix of alloys and rubber between your legs. My dad eventually got her cycling by getting her a bike without her knowledge and simply placing her on top of it, and chased her around the area a bit. This was not at all what she expected and really started to like it! Even after a while warmed up to the idea of clipping your foot into the pedal. Here is Alpha, the first and the one she started on. And no, it has not had a wash since... well I can't remember. After what seems to be a lifetime, and minor upgrades and fixes here and there, they came to a point where my parents decided that they need softtails, using the excuse that they where getting old. And after much fussing to put the wheels in motion, I was assigned the task of building my mom her a proper softtail with a budget of 25k, and the permission to salvage parts from her old ride. Step one would be to gather all the parts needed for the dually. So I blew through most of my budget, purchasing a medium carbon dual suspension frame and many extras including a headset, handlebars, Rockshox Monarch RL, 105mm stem, setback seatpost and clamp and finally a set of tyres. Granted the stem and seatpost will most likely change, but this was the deal, all for R16 000 from one of our own hubbers. All seemed to be good, until I swapped out the QR hangers with the through-axle... Both screws stripped on the way out and upon replacing them and fitting the hanger, I saw that the hole for the screw wasn't aligned properly... I'll see later if this will have an effect... Here is the damage But the rest was as good as gold. Well black gold in the form of woven carbon fibers. The next step for me and my dad, was the wheels. Having gone through a process of elimination we ended up with very few options, mainly Stans ZTR Crest or a set of Rapide R27 wheels and for only R3 690 and weighing in at 1659 grams they seemed like the route to go. And upon their arrival impressed we all where! Behold we had a set of very good looking and quite light MTB wheels! Complete with QR and through axle options which swapped out quite easily. Upon them I mounted a set of Arisun Mount Graham 2.2 tyres with their moderate weight of 650 grams each, they seemed to go well with the rims. I seated both tyres with Stans NoTubes Sealant, 80ml in each tyre, and a single 25g canister. They seated without a fuss and sealed properly. Being R18 690 into the budget already I needed to start salvaging. So I dug up a crankset we had kept for just such an occasion, a basically new Sram S2000 crankset. I can see the envy and jealousy brewing even on my own face whilst putting this magnificent being together. I'm jittery with excitement to carry on, and will do so as soon as I can. I'm currently hunting for all the necessary parts, scouring the internet for what needs to be found, for the right price of coarse. I'll continue with the following parts of my forum as I carry on with the build and find or fashion the parts I need. It's quite exhilarating to see what course the unfinished black steed of carbon fibers is going to take!
  24. Looking to buy a 29er carbon hardtail. Budget is ±R35k. Would like to stick with Shimano shifters. Current options are... A) Scott Scale 920 @ R35,999 B) Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29 @ R32,999 C) ? Recommendations/pros/cons? Frame issues? Difficulty to get a warrany replacement? Please keep in mind the budget is around R35k. Please also state why you recommend it over A and B. Price? Better carbon? Better groupset? Lighter? Cheaper? Warranty? etc.
  25. Hi guys, So my frame recently got damaged and I'm hoping to get insurance to replace the frame. I am currently riding a Momsen SL729, which they don't make anymore. I therefore can basically choose any hardtail frame to replace it with...I would like your suggestions on some great frames? P.S. saw this, what you think? http://www.evobikes.co.za/framesets/flu-x-29er.html Thanks Quintin
