  1. Been looking out for this event for 2016...couldnt find it anywhere...been watching the roag site...nothing. I contacted the race director and there is good news...it looks like it will be happening again this 20 August 2016. I really enjoyed it last year... the view from the top is worth the hard work. http://www.tourdekrantz.co.za/ best you get your biltong and sausage before you ride...it sells out
  2. Does anybody know where I can find good quality XCO (stiffer sole) mountain bike shoes in size UK13.5 (EU50). All on-line and local shops only stock up to 12 (at most) and many of these are rather narrow as well. Thanks!
  3. I thought this might be of interest to someone New tracking method adapted to all budgets. Both mobiles and bikes are an easy target for thieves. Fortunately, technology advances to help us and make life difficult for criminals. For the next generation mobiles you can download applications for tracking in case of theft or loss, for instance on iPhone you can useFind my iPhone, and if you have Android: Prey. Unfortunately these applications will not ensure you get your phone back, but you should install them because they provide another layer of security, making things more difficult to thieves. On bicycles locks are still being necessary, but I want to talk about a device that can be installed and provides a tracking service, but don’t say it aloud, we won’t give thieves any clues. What is it about? It’s about Trackr, A small and discreet device the size of a coin that is revolutionizing the market. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-4.jpg But… How does it work?Very easy! It will take less than five minutes to put it to work. You simply have to pair it with your mobile phone and download the free application which will allow you to locate at all times. Once this is done, you simply have to put it on your key chain, in your wallet or in any object you want to locate always. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-seat.jpg Now just have to open the application on your mobile and you can see on the map the position of your device. If you get to lose your keys, simply select “find device” and you’ll get the coordinates of the new location. http://www.discovernewtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/trackr-bravo-maps.jpgWith Trackr you’ll be able to locate your device at any timeIn the following video you’ll be able to see it in action: How much is it going to cost me?You’re probably thinking that this device will be very expensive…. nope. This is the best part, you can acquire one for so little, the price is about £20. Not bad considering it givespeace of mind. How to buy it?That’s easy, you can buy it from the website. https://buy.thetrackr.co/gu/special-offers/09/?utm_source=1630&utm_medium=trackr-ZA&utm_term=28174285&utm_content=321&utm_campaign=GU&aff_id=1630&camp_id=10271&clk_id=28174285&sub_id=trackr-ZA UPDATENow you can get free shipping. Offer ends on on Tuesday 10th May 2016 Other functionsDo you often forget your wallet? Forget where you parked the car? Or want to prevent your pet from escaping? With Trackr you can also track your personal belongings, just simply attach it to anything you consider important for you or easy to lose, you link it to your Smartphone (with the Trackr application) and you will find what you lost, it’s that easy! Detailed instructions on how to use TrackrNow that you are aware of the potential of this curious device, we will make a brief summary to clear all your doubts: Step 1: Get Trackr from this website, you’ll get it delivered to your home in about 1 week.Step 2: Link Trackr Bravo with your Smartphone (iPhone or Android) and place it next to the object you don’t want to lose.Step 3: Download the app and always have in hand the location of your valuables. As Simple As That!

  5. Hi, I just moved into SA recently and despite doing road biking for the last 2Y, now I find myself more tempted to move to MTB (The roads here seem a bit dangerous better to go on weekends to some trails) To give you some context... I ride just because I enjoy and it's a way to keep fit, I have no plans to compete, still like to beat myself and the adrenalin of speed, but the reality is that I am a very basic rider and will be looking for XC mainly. I'm planning to sell my Trek Emonda S5 (2015), and buy a full suspension MTB (read many posts on the forum and my mind is made), my budget is around R30000. My options: 1. Spez camber comp 29 (R34k) 2. Spez camber 29 (R26K) 3. Trek Fuel 8 (R???) 4. Merida ninety six 9.600, 9.800 or even the XT (R45.000 in cyclelab) 5. Spez Epic Comp 29 (R40K) Btw, I am 1,85m tall and the guys in a store were trying to sell me a Spez camber comp carbon XL , the info I found is that I should be looking for an L size, can you guys confirm it? I also need to consider the option of the 2nd value, in case I want to sell it in a few years time. Really appreciate your opinions! Thanks
  6. Hey Guys, So I have narrowed my search down to 3 bikes. [i ride chilled single track, fireroads, want to start doing more advanced single tracks as my skill level increases, don't want to die climbing. Have a slightly more aggressive style.] The bikes are: SCOTT GENIUS 740 27.5 SILVERBACK SLIDER 2 27.5 GIANT TRANCE 2 27.5 They are all around the R35k mark new. Also looking at the second hand market but the same bikes. Giant most expensive bike, then Scott and Silverback the same price. Can't find many reviews on the Silverback but they seem to be very popular, another bike shop sells Scott more than anything else and Giants well Giant. Help Appreciated

  8. We would appreciate and hope you can help us with some advice and feedback on our plans to buy mountain bikes: My brother and I live in Centurion and are seriously considering taking the plunge and getting a couple of mountain bikes, both for fitness and for fun. We are quite similar in that we are both about 40, overweight (about 100kg when we should be about 75kg), about 1,77m tall with an inside seam of about 76cm, so we are probably looking at medium (about 19'') frames, from what we have been able to gather by reading articles. At the beginning we will be mostly on roads, with some pavement and dirt, in order to get fit. Later, when we are more comfortable and confident, we hope to do more and more trails. From some personal narratives we have read, it seems as if the larger wheels (29ers) will therefore suit our purposes more (although we will welcome any expert opinions). We figure we have a total budget of about R10,000 – R12,000 (though we might be able to push it a little bit). Quite a few people have mentioned Silverbacks, specifically recommending the Solas as great beginner bikes, although the cheapest Solas we saw (Sola 4, 2015 model, new) are in the R10,000 - R11,500 range, which is about double our budget. Some of the online shops advertising Solas were Singletrack Cycles, VBike, Redhub Cycling and Cycle Factory. Although we are scared to buy secondhand since we don't know enough about MTBs to make sure we don't get ripped off, there are a couple of Silverback Solas available secondhand: - A Sola 4 advertised secondhand for R7,000 in Kempton Park (frame size unknown, wheel size unknown) https://www.olx.co.za/ad/silverback-sola-4-ID15Qanc.html#3c5be512b9 - And a Sola 3 (medium, 29er) for R8,500 in Nelspruit https://www.olx.co.za/ad/silverback-sola-3-ID15OgSm.html#3c5be512b9 The entry level Silverback 29ers seem much cheaper. A Spectra Sport (2015) is advertised for R4,999.98 at Cycle Lab, R5,500 at Kyalami Cycles and R5,999.99 at VBike (all online prices). Bearing in mind the cost of accessories like helmets (definitely) and probably gloves, eventually shoes, shorts, etc. will all add up, we figure the advantage of buying new is getting a warrantyso won't have to worry too much about things breaking and paying for repairs and replacements, plus building a relationship with a shop that can help with advice, skills and equipment, but buying secondhand we can save a few bucks plus there is always a chance for a few accessories thrown in to sweeten the deal (although maybe a store would be willing to do the same, since we are buying two bicycles, which seems a pretty good deal for the shop). We would appreciate any advice and recommendations you might have. We are not set on anything as we are complete novices when it comes to MTBs, and plan to go to a few shops in Centurion and maybe Pretoria this Saturday in person to look at bikes and talk to the experts. We understand that the risks are that we buy beginner level bikes and then get hooked and want to upgrade, but our budgets simply won’t stretch that far yet, so we hope to buy decent bikes now that will allow us to upgrade later, as it will be a long, long time before we even consider competitive riding, if ever. So any thoughts on specific bikes, shops, prices, new or secondhand, equipment, accessories or anything else we are not considering or you think we are wrong about – please help and drop a comment!
  9. Not mine, but I clinched when I saw it.
  10. Greetings everyone, As many now, I am involved in organising a race and lending some help with others. Each event has it's unique challenges and is almost impossible to please everyone all of the time. The idea is to please as many of the cyclists as often as one can. From the list (above), what is important to you as a cyclist - I've tried to split it between ROAD and MTB. Please don't compare to the BIG MTB events in the sticks that enjoy big, mountainous climbs - we don't have such luxuries in the urban centres. I'm trying to get an objective view of what people would like, compare it against what is possible, and then see how we can get other organisers to buy into the collective ideas to make as many races as possible satisfactory. You'll notice that the ROAD poll has an option called PERMANENT NUMBER. While I am still trying to get some officials and race organisers to buy in the PERMANENT NUMBER concept to ease the hassles related to number collection, this one is specific to the event I am associated with: Assume the permanent number concept doesn't take off, and the status quo remains as is, would you buy a permanent "cloth" number that can be used exclusively at our event for the years ahead (and maybe one or two others)?Feel free to add to the list and submit your comments, which I hope will help my efforts to bring about improvements in cycling (in our province and perhaps elsewhere too).

  13. Hi all So I just recently moved down to Cape Town and will be heading to Jacobsbay area over the long weekend. Obviously taking the bike with... Can anyone tell me if there are any nice routes to ride and if it safe-ish? I'll be riding alone and have never been there Thanks

  15. Who is doing what this weekend at Sabie
  16. So due to a certain series of events I'll be doing Argus this year on my MTB not my road bike. So a couple of questions... 1. How badly will my tyres get eaten? Racing Ralph Snakeskins. 2. What sort of tyre pressure should I run at? 3. What should be my earliest start group given that I'm on an MTB? (This is obviously as a courtesy to the hardcore roadies...) Edit: Anything else I should be wary of?
  17. Hey Guys, Just a quick one, I have had a look through the forums and cant find much on the topic. I need to know what the difference would be between a 27.5 inch wheel and 29 inch wheel for my size, which is 1.93m. I just need to know if I should strictly stay to a 29er due to my height, or if a 27.5 will do just as well for my size? If you have a link to article which answers my question, please let me have it. *I am NOT asking for the pro's and con's between the two, or which one does what, as that has been discussed at length in previous threads and I'm not gonna be responsible for creating an argument
  18. Gooday All With today being World Cancer Awareness Day (4th Feb), I would like to know from all of you, who put many hours on the bike, how you feel knowing about the link between testicular cancer and cycling? I am obviously speaking to men between the ages of 15 and 40, as this is the main target group. I would like to use this opportunity to chat about it, and hopefully educate a person or two, and hear what others think? The floor is open...
  19. Hi all, I've been toying with the idea of getting an iPhone 6 mount for my MTB as an alternative to splurging on a dedicated bike gps such as a Garmin Edge 520 (+- R5500). I was thinking of getting a Wahoo cadence sensor and using this with my Wahoo Tickr HR monitor, all feeding into Strava while riding. In terms of the actual bike mounts, I've considered the 2 following options: Rokform Pro Series Mount + iPhone 6 Case ($99 Plus Courier Fees etc, will work out to +- R2000) - http://www.rokform.com/v3-bike-mount/or Quad Lock Bike Kit iPhone 6 (R899) - http://www.quadlockcase.co.za/products/bike-kit-iphone-6My Bike's stem is 75 mm so not sure if the Quad Lock option will work. At this stage, besides the price, I'm keener on the Rokform option as I like how you can adjust the angle and it looks quite rad. I haven't been able to find any local re sellers of the Rokform option, can anyone help with this? Any thoughts on the above would greatly be appreciated...
  20. Hi guys, is there any bloem hubbers here and will there be any rides over this weekend 15/16/17 Jan 2016? Thanks
  21. Hi Guys, I have got a very very frustrating shifting issue on my X-Large Specialized Camber Comp Carbon 2015 than I am hoping you could give me some possible causes and solutions. The rear derailleur shifting down works like a charm. Shifting up causes the chain to jump and slap(not always). This is exaggerated under torque. During mid cassette shift it even sometimes causes the chain to jump off and sit between the frame and the cassette. I have attached slow-mo videos of this happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WHkL8Xk8dchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVKUs1wBKn4 Its worth noting. The bike is stock(see attached spreadsheet) except for the items mentioned below. I have tried the following; Current Cassette Sram - SRAM PG1050 10 Speed MTBBrand new chain - Shimano SLX CN-HG75 10 Speed MTBPrevious chain with 250km - SRAM PC-1051 ChainNew shifter cableTested with a different rear shifter - Shimano XT M780 10 Speed Trigger ShifterPlease help me resolve with possible causes and resolutions. Thank you in advance.
  22. Tell us about your choice of baggy color
  23. I have been mainly doing MTB riding for just over a year now and I have seen my SPEED increase dramatically as I get fitter. I really enjoy the MTB and have no intention of giving it up anytime soon . So dont worry too much MTB'ers I did the 94.7 ROAD with the MTB after not having done further than 35km (stupid I know) and I was battred and bruised.. As one of the "Nice" looking ladies told me when I cramped up "You are very brave to do it on a MTB"..Anyway, I have unfinished Business with that route as I obviously want to do it alot quicker.. So I spent December on the Classifieds and I recently purchase a second hand Road Bike on the there for a Bargain... Was I in for a surprise as to just HOW MUCH faster a Road Bike is... My average speed over my local 55km route (remember its my first time out on the Road Bike and I have just done a setup from tips online) was 7kph faster than the same route a week earlier on the Knobblies. I had plenty of energy left and felt quit depressed that I did not push harder. Anyway, I reckon if i can get into a semi-regular group ride(to take advantage of the drafting) and Seed a little better, the next 94.7 is going to be a BIG improvement.. Any tips who I can ride with in Alberton,,, I averaged 29kph over the 55km route (albeit a little flattish)
  24. Gooday All, I am still looking at getting a mountain bike for this year. My budget is still very limited and capped at 5k. I cannot extend it at all. There is no use in looking in the classifieds as I need an XL frame and they are rarer then hens teeth, so no luck there. I will be using the bike for weight loss and exercise, going on very basic trails around BRB and the like. (think more 'around the block jog' than '100m extreme dash') I found the best value for money bike for this use would be the Axis A70 for R4.5k brand new (2016 model). The fact that they are controlled and owned by Scott bikes I would think that it is a very capable and better quality budget bike. My biggest surprise is that in this price range, you generally find mechanical disks. This bike has hydraulic disks, and it has a lockout fork! (albeit coil). http://www.axis-bikes.com/bikes/path-and-trail-series/a70 Any thoughts and/or experiences you care to share? Regards.
