  1. As most people around here will know from some comments I have made over the last few months, my sister started riding around October last year. To me, she doesn't really appear to be getting fitter or faster. I know that part of her issue is she doesn't really understand what I am explaining about gearing the bike, and I don't know how else to explain it to her. Off road she averages about 10km/h and on the road its about 15km/h, but she constantly wants to stop because she says her legs are burning. Last Sunday we did 28km on the road and by the end she wanted to throw up and cry. I found some exercises for off the bike to help build the legs but they don't appear to be helping too much. She rode a few times while I was out with a broken clavicle with some friends, but, since I have been back on the bike (around the middle of March) she rides with me 3 times a week (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday so it isn't consecutive days on the bike). She has entered the 947 cycle challenge, so I need to find a way to get her ride that distance by November. So, to my questions: 1.Am I expecting too much too soon? 2.Does anyone have recommendations on how to build her fitness levels? (Personally I think she just needs time in the saddle and to stop whining, but that approach is clearly not working ) 3.How do I explain the gearing (3x9) - maybe a video?
  2. With a UCI Level 1 coach and two pro riders, outrides from Cycle Shack is not just fun but safe, instructional and highly recommended. Moot, Mountain View, Pta North area. Look for daily post on FB @ https://www.facebook.com/cyclefitnessshack?ref=hlfor updated details or contact Hannes on 0827898141
  3. I bought his Total Heart Rate Training book. I have sold my road bicycle and decided to do just MTB. I have some confusion regarding my HR zones and not convinced I am seeing the correct zone values. Here are my questions: Does the surface matter for the 30 minutes field test? Does it have to be offroad if I do MTB? Or can it be tar?The gravel road that I did my field test on has some steep hills with nice downhills after it. It starts off with a nice flat surface with some small inclines. Towards the 2nd half of the route the hills start. Will these hills influence my average heart rate? What I mean is will it bring down my average heart rate if the downhills are long? I don’t pedal much on these downhills, so my average heart rate will be reduced? My average heart rate for the last 20 minutes of the test is 173 bpm (which should be my lactate threshold) and my max is 181 bpm. Is this low for my average? Some guys get a max HR of over 200!Does anyone use his way of determining your HR zones and actually training by it? What I find with MTB is that my heart rate is relatively high. If i have to pedal any slower to bring it down I am going to fall over
  4. The attention created by various diets, controversial or not, has seen a definite shift in attitudes to food types and eating habits. Natural, unprocessed foods are becoming more popular and Raw Revolution got my attention recently during a multistage MTB race. They are one of the nutrition companies trending towards a more natural nutrition option for athletes, so I was quite keen to try the product when it was offered. Click here to view the article
  5. Hi there hubbers! I'm curious to find out what other cyclist use as fuel (energy drink; supplements; food; ect) when training or on race day? Please share your advice and tips! Happy cycling
  6. So looking at the Isuzu competition https://www.bikehub.co.za/features/_/articles/competitions/enter-now-isuzu-trucks-pe-plett-entries-up-for-grabs-r2416 Clearly I don't train enough, week one is easy, but week 2 will be a tough week for my level of training. (getting 3000m of climbing in). Never mind week 4 with 12 hours of riding in a week For you guys doing a 4hr Clarens marathon, is the isuzu challenge in the ball park for your weekly training effort?
  7. Has anyone used this hub in their wheelset? What is the quality of this hub like? If the wheel has been built up how much of a degreade is it when compared to the Mavic Crossmax SL wheeelset? Is it a worth while to get the hub?
  8. I would like to hear what your opinions are regarding power meters for MTB - better on the bike or on an indoor trainer? I want to do the power training "thing" to see what all the hype is all about. I think it is all just phase that everyone is going through, I think next we will probably be using brain power meters to do training on I am thinking of buying a power meter, I like the Powertap MTB Hub. Is it really worth it? And how important is it to have the power meter during a race? Would it be ok to train with the wheel and when you do a race put on your racing wheels? I was just thinking because many people doing Cadence Cycling classes or use Watt Bikes but can't afford power meters for the bicycle, they can't see their power reading during a race. What other decent power meters really work for MTB?
  9. To reach your fitness goals and maintain them, you need to train smarter, not harder and this can be achieved by understanding your heart. Your “maximum heart rate” is the maximum number of times your heart beats in one minute. To calculate an average reading of your max heart rate, take the number 220 for men or 226 for women and minus your age. For Example 226 – 30 = 196; a 30 year old woman’s max heart rate is 196 beats per minute. Click here to view the article

  13. Tapering is a training strategy that allows endurance athletes to achieve peak performance for major competitions. Manipulating both the volume and the intensity of the training during the taper allows the athletes to flush out any fatigue without losing training induced adaptations. View full article
  14. 2014 presented South Africa’s top cyclists with a ‘new’ challenge as some of the major races took place at moderate altitudes. The first race of the 2014 MTN National MTB series took place in Dullstroom and one of the SA XCO Cup Series races took place at the Afriski resort. These two locations would have compounded the usual stress of racing with the additional stress of lower oxygen availability. In this article I will explain the physiology behind competing at altitude and also offer some practical tips on how to minimise the potential detrimental effects of competing in this oxygen-starved environment. 15. The benefits of strength training on endurance performance have long been debated. Previously strength training was thought to negatively affect endurance performance due to increases in muscle mass and the feeling of tired or heavy legs. However, recent research has shown that it is possible to improve endurance performance by incorporating well-structured strength training as part of your preparations. In this article we will explain the proposed benefits of strength training as well as provide some guidelines on what to look for in a strength training programme. Click here to view the article
  16. Hi to all the Hubbers out there! Ever since I've started working from home December 2013 I have more time for training but I dont know if I'm doing the right kind of training.. I normally ride my MTB 5 times a week (or I'm trying to). Distances from 20km - 80km. The shorter distances I tend to ride fullgas and the longer rides at a much easier pace. After my 4th ride in a week my body is "eina" ....from shoulders to hands and my legs is burning. This might also be incorrect bike setup, but according to my local bike shop everything is fine. When it comes to HR I use the formula 220 - Age to get my maximum HR, this cant be correct so Im looking for someone in Cape Town (Northern Suberbs) to help me with correct bike setup, correct training plan, nutrition help and HR zone help????? I would like to hear your thoughts and plz help if you can. Cheers
  17. A very important, but often neglected area of training for endurance athletes is strength-work. In light of this - the Discovery High Performance Centre of the SSISA will be hosting a workshop specifically geared at strength training for endurance performance. Click here to view the article
  18. So, I've been riding quite seriously for about a year. I've been training really hard on the bike and my IDT fro the last 6 months. I've now dropped 2 kilograms and my legs are getting stronger. But, my upper body is starting to look like Chris Froome's - white, pasty and without any muscles or definition. Yuk I'm currently doing cycle training 4 or 5 days a week. Does anyone have any brilliant suggestions with regard to training my upper body so I don't look like a wimp, when I take my shirt off? I'm 50, done some weight training previously and spent some time in the gym.

  20. Hi there, I am looking for some people to train with for Hill2Hill n September. I find that i dont have the drive to get up and go unless there is someone to brave the cold with. I am currently focusing on short rides with high intensity training and then on the weekends i do a longer ride with less intensity (40%-50%) with more technical stuff thrown in, and not avoiding climbing either. Anyone in Howick or surrounds that is interested please shout!!
  21. We have entered Cape Epic 2015 and was wondering if anyone has advice on whether we should do the Cape Pioneer in preparation for the Cape Epic? Is it too close to Epic or do you see it as a good training ride?
  22. How much training do you need for the 175 stage race? Do you need to be riding over 100km?
  23. G'day Hubbers, Could anyone please give advice on a PowerBeam Pro VS. i420 indoor cycle. I have very little IDT experience I only ride MTB so I think it would be good using PowerBeam trainer so I still sit on a MTB, while on a i420 cycle it is more road setup. But would you get the same training from a PowerBeam Pro vs. i420 indoor cycle. i420 is heavy so I feel you could work harder I don't believe cost would be that big differance cos if I buy a a PowerBeam Pro I would still want a new rear wheel with slick tyre + I'm running X01 so that means wheel with X01 cassette. Then also extra miles on your bike = servicing. And is it good to have your carbon frame clamped down while your going working hard on bike ...must be a lot more stress on frame?
  24. This is a request to all experianced MTBers I am well behind on my Sani2c training, what can i do to maximize my fitness/hill climbing ability before the 14th of May? 25. So what are you up to training wise this week? Some climbing? Intervals? Or tapering your ass off? I was planning to ride a 2h session on Wednesday and Thursday and maybe focus some more on stretching every day. Nothing on Friday and Saturday though. What are your plans?
