MTBeer Posted March 20, 2019 Share I read an argument the other day about this^^^. Muslims kills 1000's of people a day in countries like Nigeria. But it does not make the news. Now one Mosque is shot up, now it is international news and in parliament gets opened with a Muslim prayer.... Very interesting points of few that came out. That argument is a braindead argument. Would you rather live in a civilized country like NZ where a mass killing makes big new, or a sheethole like Nigeria/Afgan/Iraq/Syria where mass killings are the norm? Equating an incident in a country where that is the norm to an incident in a country where this sort of thing is an aberration is not a logical argument. A separate argument/question would be that we live in neither Nigeria nor New Zealand, so why have we become so desensitised by death in countries where its happens more often? Why are we more ok with those thousands of deaths vs the more random NZ type ones? Is it a factor of "closer to home hurst more", is it a factor of the news channels we get exposed too, is it a factor that we are uncomfortable criticising other religions or ideologies out fear of being branded intolerant, is it a factor that of...... I dont know, we should care more but we dont seem too, be it racism in the US law enforcement, whats happening in China with the re-education or some of the states in the middle east. These are all hate driven violence. I think the NZ and Dutch PMs have done relatively good job coming out and standing against this type of hatred driven violence. Why don't we see more of it? Happens there all the time, therefore "normalized" and expectedNZ - civilized society. Happens there not at all, therefore not "normalized" and totally unexpected. It's like the USA school shooting thing. If a school shooting happens in the USA, it's hardly news, but we still react to it. If a school shooting happens in Oz, UK or Nederlands, for example, it receives far more airtime as it's out of the ordinary and unexpected.
