An invitation………….

 

to visit the Smuts House Museum in Irene free of charge this Wednesday!

 

The Museum is housed in “The Big House” which is itself of great historical interest.  It is an old prefabricated wood and iron Officers’ Mess which was initially transshipped from India to Middelburg in South Africa.  It was purchased by Jan Smuts in 1909 and was then transported by steam train to Doringkloof Farm in Irene where it was reconstructed as a ‘temporary’ home for Smuts.  However, the Smuts Family ended up making this structure their homestead for over 40 years.

 

The house is home to a wonderful collection of military memorabilia, original photos, citations, furniture, archival material and artifacts from Smuts’s day.  His extensive library can be seen. A visit to the museum is a trip back into the past.  Smuts was prominent in three major wars: he was a Boer general in the Anglo-Boer War. In World War l, he was in command of the Commonwealth Forces in East Africa, South West Africa and the East African campaign.  In World War ll he was second-in-command of the British War Office (after Sir Winston Churchill)

 

Behind the Museum is the Oubaas trail, a circular walking route of 2.4km.  This koppie is where Smuts used to walk to collect his thoughts. Stromatolitic rocks dating back 2 700 millions years can be seen on the walk, along with an arboretum, graves of bywoners and a simple granite monolith which bears the plaques of remembrance of members of the Smuts Family.

 

A tea garden, adjacent to the Museum is renowned for its cream scones!
