Got me the new Garmin Varia radar at the London Bike show. Man it works a treat. It’s so handy being aware of cars approaching from behind.

Please keep us posted on how this works.

Do you not find yourself looking down at the screen more often instead of the road ahead? Amazing technology it is.

Do you find yourself puckering, bracing for impact or preparing to take evasive action (tuck and roll onto kerb or dive into the bushes) or

Does it just give you an extra layer of awareness ?

It works very well, much better than expected actually, it has a huge range. New one also doesn't ruin the the look of the bike too much:

Well if we can aero tuck like froome, maybe we can stem stare like him too. No not at all actually. It beeps when it picks up a car, waaaay back. So you actually just listen, it beeps faster if the car is travelling at speed. So I hardly use the visuals on screen at all. Its more of a notification that a car is coming and then you can look around to see and take the appropriate action.

Yes, extra layer of awareness. I often get surprises and frights from cars that I didnt hear coming, thats when little poos shoot out.

Yesterday we were on a casual ride up chappies, a buddy and I, we both had Varias. We rode much of the way two abreast caching up, but not once did we get in the way of cars or hold anybody up. Car approaches, you hear the beep while its still more than 100m away, you move into single file, car can pass without having to slow down to our speed.

I love mine. I also got the newer model. As you say, the range is great, gives you that added level of awareness especially when descending at speed with wind noise in your ears. It does chew through the battery of my Edge 520 though. Always need to make sure it’s fully topped up before heading out on longer rides.

I got the new varia radar as a Xmas present. Use it all the time, range is great.  I find it very useful when turning right as can tell me if road behind is clear before moving out into traffic.

I would suggest that you still glance over your shoulder before moving right though ;)

That I do, the radar just adds an extra dimension of safety when there is no lines of red on the 520 ;)
