Please don't flame me for this silly question!!

I know its a hell of a strange heading for a topic, but I have no idea!!

Did 2013 Argus in 6hrs 01, Did 2014 Argus in 4hrs40min with my bikes front derailleur busted and my chain stuck on the big ring.

Also didn't do that much training, probably 8 70 to 80km training rides and a couple of the Tuesday night sessions at Killarney.

Want to up my game considerably during the course of this year and do more races. I am 45, started smoking again.

Looking for some sort of idea of what factors affect the target I set myself, and are there training programmes that include the off Season?

Weight...single biggest factor in determining improvement

And by weight I mean your body, not your bike

cycling is a power to weight ratio game....

What are your aspirations?

To earn a particular seeding

To avg X during races

To lose weight

To ride a sub 3:20 Argus

Whatever it is, work backwards.

Base training during winter time builds a good platform for performance jn Spring and Summer.

The bigger the base, the higher the peak.

Using Dales' advice, you will be absolutely amazed at what you can do. The catch is to have a plan, and to execute it consistently and patiently. There is no easy quick fix.

STOP SMOKING!!!!

start there and work out the rest while on the bike, set your own goals and measure yourself against them vs what other people tell you you should do.

+1 on the STOP SMOKING!!!

Set a goal - if you aim at nothing you hit it all the time

What am I capable of? Anything you put your mind to. If you want to ride a sub 3 Argus next year, you can.

In 1998 also had a busted front derailier , did around 4 hours. Decided that I would get more serious. Got a coach - Fit Pro - at the time asked if they would get me to 3:15 for the next year. They said no problem started training with them and did 3:06 the next year from the H bunch.

So if you train You should be capable of at least 3:30.

Eish.... best you start planning to drop to 60kg or below.... half the problem.... the other half is stopping smoking.

Until you have got somewhere close to that, the best is just to ride your bike - 6 days a week, at least 60 - 120 minutes every day - that will build a base for you to work off to build on.

Great advice and here is another nugget from Joe.

There are dreams and there are goals - dreams are great in determining goals but goals have timelines and plans
