Mojoman Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I went to Dundee High in the 80's , it was a dual medium school back then....the fun was endless....!
Uni Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 My afrikaans used to be pretty good when my then boss forced us to be tweetalig - but since then I butcher the language badly so I rather pretend not to understand it at all. Trying to read in Afrikaans now is a total mind $%##$@ but with words and phrases like "duskant ombliksem", "aspoestertjie" and "onder, deur die tafel uit" - how can you not love it. slowashell, fanievb, IdeJongh and 5 others 8
Stretch Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 i was once doing some survey work in the middle of the karoo...and stayed with a local farmer - I had to practice and plan what I was going to say at the breakfast and dinner table each day..eventually they told me to just speak english
Vetseun Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I am a Soutpiel who can speak Afrikaans like a Dutchman. When I came to Bloemfontein 20 plus years ago, I couldn't speak Afrikaans. After the third PK from a big dutchie, I realised that I needed to learn Afrikaans fast. SwissVan, slowashell, HowellingWulf and 2 others 5

Caerus Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 While at school I worked as an usher at a cinema. There was this older Afrikaans boy who was school drop out that would always want to bully the younger guys, so we ended up "wrestling" in the staff room often. Anyway he liked calling the English guys "sout pielle (SP)" .... he then proceeded to tell us that it was because we have on leg in England and one leg in South Africa with our, you guessed it, "piel" in the sea. My response to him was "well no wonder you are so jealous knowing just how long our P3n1s is then" ... then led to a new round of "wrestling" I have digressed, Afrikaans is a lovely language if not taken to it's lowest slang form, but kept clean and fluid..... just so many ways to describe somethings. My Afrikaans girlfriend calls me this all the time, I even have a T-Shirt, lol. Hairy 1
Uni Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 our afrikaans teacher - Mevrou Botha - instilled the fear of a "kwaai tannie" in us... she would throw english words and phrases at us and we'd have to answer or she'll throw a blackboard duster at us. The one day, the guy in the front row was asked to translate traffic jam - to which he responded - "verkeer's konfyt" - he got slapped across the face. So the time I said - What is die tyd? .... Yeah... let's leave that back there.... FlandersZA 1
SwissVan Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Born in Bloemfontein but don't tell anyone I voted EnglishThe English side needs the votes... Actually, one thing we have noticed over the last 10 years is how much more Afrikaans is spoken in SA than before

NotSoBigBen Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 it stands to reason that since Afrikaans is the 2nd (or is it the 3rd) most spoken language in the country that the majority will be Afrikaans speaking here..but as Armpies says..english is the universal language for business and communications worldwide...and I do believe that Matt Admin is English as well..so I guess that is the main reason and www.diedingesindimiddelvandiewiel.co.za doesnt really work Wats fout met 'diewielnaaf.co.za' ..... het julle niks by Oom Hendrik geleer nie fanievb, scotty, Wannabe and 1 other 4
