Riding Accident: Was it my fault or just a racing accident?

Morning Everyone

Yesterday I participated in the Tour de Krantz and was involved in a crash with another rider. I would like to know if it was my fault or just something that happens and should you just get on with it?

About 4km in I was riding on a dirt farm road on the far right hand shoulder of the road. The fellow rider came up behind me saying passing right, now I was so close to the right edge I didn't know how he would pass, so I looked behind me and asked him which side he wants to pass, and got the answer very sarcastically with " this right hand side" with his arm thrown up, so I just let him do his thing, he came up next to me and as he passed on my right he hit a tree with his handlebars and went down in front of me, I managed to miss him but barely but did stop and made sure he was ok,which he answered with a rather harsh couple statements and grunting.

I ask if it was my fault, due to the fact that there was a whole dirt road to my left, so was it my duty to move all the way over, when he could easily have just ridden straight passed with no hassle?

Thanks guys

Why were you right over on the RHS of the road? Bad road condition to the left or just personal preference?

I had an idea the convention was to keep left (as at Northern Farm for instance) but maybe my perception comes from years of driving a car.

Seems a bit suicidal of the guy passing if it was just to make a point . . .

The right hand side had the smoothest path and was the same line everyone was riding so sort of just sat on that same line.

Fair enough.

Not sure why he said he wanted to pass on the right, if there was space on the left to overtake. The rider wanting to overtake shouldn't expect you to move off of your preferred line...and kudos to you for stopping to check whether he was ok!

As long as you hold your line, up to back rider to pass safely. If he takes a chance where there are obstacles, his problem.

Maybe he was pissed coz you were putting him in the gutter !! :-)

Ride left and pass right I say. If you cannot ride on the left then tough luck on the guy who still wants to pass right. I would have moved left to allow the faster rider to pass on my right under the circumstances. It appears the left side was ok to ride. IMHO. (Unless of course you are going for podium)Rather play safe as it could have been you in the dirt and by the sounds of it, this guy would not have stopped. Shot on you stopping.

One should leave enough space on your right for a faster rider to pass on the right - just a courtesy thing.

I would have moved over to the left when circumstances allowed it and given the guy space to come past safely on your right but if the guy was trying the pseudo professional freight train coming through get out my way now style of riding and tried to muscle past without giving you a fair chance to move he got what was coming. Either way he choose to ride too close to a tree and paid the consequences, not like he was forced into that line, could have taken the wide open left side?

It's a race. Make him fight for his position. Imagine the F1 guys let everyone past

But ya, if I see someone is making an effort to let me past. Be it going right or left or just holding a line to let me pass on another, I'm generally appreciative. This guy just sounds like a sourpuss.
