I have some serious underpronation going on, and my last pair of running shoes did not work out at all. Anyone have some advice and experience regarding which specific shoes to get in order to counter this? Is inner soles necessary?

By ‘under-pronation’ I assume you mean supination, where your foot strikes the ground with excessive outward roll (as opposed to excessive inward roll = pronation) and does not roll inwards enough after impact.

My understanding is that your foot is supposed to roll laterally from landing slightly on the outside edge & rolling inwards to allow an effective toe-off with your big toe. Problems occur when your foot rolls too much either way.

I would suggest making sure you are not using an anti-pronation shoe as this will contribute to preventing inward roll, and try out some neutral shoes on a shoe-store treadmill with someone who knows what they’re looking at checking how this affects the way your foot rolls.

Also avoid shoes with very wide sideways flares on the midsole adjacent to the heel, as this can cause a ‘whiplash’ effect when this part of the shoe hits the ground first.

Hope this helps

I pronate and suffered severe knee pain when I started running. I run with neutral shoes with orthotics for 4 years now and I have been pain-free since then. I went to see Dr. Franklin Dubowitz in Rosebank. He is brilliant. (Pricey of course but brilliant, cash upfront then you can claim from the medical aid.)

BTW, I see Loskop and Vaal opened today... Don't think entries will last this week.

Vaal opened last year already... but yeah, this is not the year to hesitate on entries as I have already found out. I've drawn up my whole calendar and entered everything I plan on doing already. You snooze you lose

Thanks guys - that helps a lot. I wondered about going to see someone professional, so I'm just going to do that. There's also a great running shop in CPT; will go ask for some expert advice there.

Happy running!

'ran' a rough route near harties on the weekend, 16km with 1300m elevation gain, great eye opener for the year, legs are feeling good and ready, now just need to remind them how to pedal a bike as well...

One of the biggest issues with a lack of sufficient pronation (under pronation/supination) is a lack of shock absorption. Under pronation is uncommon, and there are few shoes that really cater for it - most of these focus on additional shock absorption.

Unless you are injured/suffer from injuries regularly, I would start with a reputable running shop

With patience. Trust me, dont do anything funny now, just keep running within your limits and everything will fall in place. If you push your pace now you will get injured. After just a few months your body is not ready yet.

Second this, same goes for increasing distance

Thanks for the heads up! The guy that was running next to me at the club run this weekend was raving about Loskop; said it's second only to the Comrades for him so I'm keen to give it a go.

Yoh, thanks. Almost forgot about that. Just entered and paid for it...
