after months of not seing a single snake on our trails, I ran into a cape cobra that was crossing on trail Z the other day (hoogekraal). I barely managed to stop about 2 bike lengths from it as it was looking at me. When it saw me stop it finally started going again and left the trail, but damn it was scary, what if it took me a split second longer to stop... getting bitten at the bottom of the trail Z is bad news, coz then you have something like a 20mins climb to get back to the top + another good 5 mins to get to the parking lot, then I'm not so sure where the nearest hospital is...

Anyways, I think I'll avoid Hoogekraal during peak Snake season, conties seems to be much better to evacuate quick quick if anythings happens... especially since I do most of my rides alone

I am so afraid of riding there in the summer. Did a short loop a couple of weeks ago and shat myself for 90mins. I need to move to Iceland

Nearly went over the tail of a Mozambique spitting cobra a couple of days ago. Luckily he was more intent on getting the hell out of there, rather than pick a fight with me. I would've lost though as I wasn't even wearing glasses, and they are dead accurate with aiming for the eyes

I’ve had three separate encounters each with large black Mumba’s on the north coast sugar cane in kzn, the second incident I rode straight over him/her. They seemed to be very inquisitive up until the point of eye contact, thereafter slithered of very quickly as they(both of us) got a freight. My advise, stay clipped in and ride straight past or jump over. Say your prays after the ride ;)

Almost all snakes are that way, give them space and they will gladly disappear from sight...

Koeberg Baby:

Mole snake, not a puffy. A puffy is darker and the head much fatter. It also has chevron markings along the back, that are more pronounced.

I am interested to note that a mole snake resembles a puffy as a baby, and a cobra as an adult. Good way to make its enemies think twice before tackling it.

I came across one a few weeks back halfway up Spyker's Hill. I came around the sharp switchback just after that semi descending bit as you start climbing again, and there it was in all its 1.8 m glory. I properly pooped myself, stopped and watched it sail off into the undergrowth, before noticing the grass move as it made its way in my direction. I high tailed it out of there chop chop.
