I am so glad i dont live or intend to live in KZN... HOLY SH^!T THIS THING IS HUGE!

I've seen similar.

We used to go fishing inland from Cape Vidal on teh St Lucia estuary. Surrounded by KZN bush, only 16 rondavals tucked away between teh bushes.

We used to walk along the gravel road to the reception. This gravel road was wide enough to fit 2 cars next to each other and then there was about half a meter of grass on either side of the gravel and then dense bush.

One day we notice high above the road a new "branch" spanning from the tree top on the left to the tree top on the right. As we got closer that branch could be seen moving. It was a huge mother of a black mamba.

All i know about snakes is give it space and they will slither away. They prefer not to bite unless confronted

with the amount of potentially deadly creatures hanging around in that place I surprised that we always came out unscathed.

We're talking 6m crocs meters aways chowing the fish guts and off cuts as you clean the fish, hippos, snakes etc.

Had a similar situation a few months back with a black mamba. Fortunately it seemed he was more scared of me then I was of him. Tell you what though, in that moment even n1no wouldnt have even had anything on the speed I was out of there. ????

Yesterday i was cruising down a jeep track in deer park (ct), and saw something resembling a log in the middle of the road. Then when i got close i realised its a puff adder crossing the road. Managed to stop within metre or 2 of striking distance.

This made me think - how does one handle such a situation when you cant stop? Go past head or tail, or through the middle? Bunny hop? Ride over it and hope it doesnt catch the spokes? Would love to hear others stories.

I while back, I saw a cobra standing in the middle of the road, looking straight at me.  I stopped like 10m in front of the snake.  I had to pass and the snake didn't want to move.

I threw a couple of rocks at the snake to try and chase it away. Nothing happened, the snake just stood there.  After 10 min I started to go closer were slowly.  After another 10 min, I passed the snake without any bites or dead snakes.

(the rest of the story to follow in the next post)

...it was a stick.

I live in a game reserve and often see "snakes" in the road, that turn out to be sticks. About two weeks ago I saw a "stick" and proceeded to drive over a puffadder. I felt really k*k  :(

The problem with riding over a puffy, I don't carry any spare shorts on my rides.

...it was a stick.

In the Dwesa nature reserve on the Wild Coast, I once was going downhill quite fast in the early evening, racing home to get here before dark, because I did not have a light on the bike. Coming around a corner, I found a stick in the middle of the road and had to quickly decide whether to go over it or around it. I managed to just miss it, but suddenly the stick stood up and tried to bite me - it missed and I stopped some distance further and walked back to see what it was - a night adder! Happily we both went our own ways!

Once I was riding a jeep track with long grass on the sides and in the middle.  At around 25 km/h I saw a  cobra 1m ahead of me, over the coiled up snake I went.  I went straight home and I sat in the corner of my shower.

That jeep track never saw me again.

I learnt a good lesson driving in Kruger a few years ago - was looking into the bush while driving and when I glanced back at the road there was a rock python crossing - thick as my thigh, and about 3-4m long. Stopped in time, but not without installing my missus in the passenger footwell.
