Made a cutting board for the gf this weekend. Found out the p.o.s. ryobi thicknesser isn't working. Had to spend an extra hour with the hand plane.

Actually contemplating making a couple of these to fund a new Dewalt thicknesser now.

Had a Ryobi angle grinder that packed up on first project and a pressure washer that did not work , straight from the box. Will NEVER consider a Ryobi tool again.

Ok all done, probably not perfect but most important SWAMBO thinks it looks 'fantastic' ... Many brownie points have been earned!

But bliksem that's a lot of hard work, would I do it again? Not on your life!8a34c266f8869c67ff50178a15e5a337.jpg

Looks good - well done. I think every man with some diy skills does this once in a lifetime... and if they are smart never again... like building/buying a house with wooden windows....

Maybe someone on here can help me...

I am looking for a drill press for my odd woodworking and metal projects.  Not wanting to spend too much, R4 000 is already a bit steep but I am willing to fork that out.  I have looked at a few Gumtree adds and there are 2 that caught my eye, a Record drill press with 600 W motor for R3 000 and an ET drill press for R4 000.  Never heard of the brand ET and the add does not say what size the motor is but it looks like a 550 W or bigger motor.  There is also a new Mac Afric 16mm Drill Press at Adendorff available for R3 500 with a 550 W motor but I’m not sure it that is the way to go.

Below are the links to all the ads.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have the benchtop version of the Adendorf drill press.  Bought it off Gumtree second hand for R 1000.

Not very happy with it:  As soon as the bit is under a bit of torque, the belts just slip.  I replaced the belts, tighten them as much as possible, feed as slow as possible, speed up, slow down, nothing seems to help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions on the drill press.  It seems that the conclusion here is that what ever I buy at around R4 000 I will either strike it lucky and be happy with the purchase or it might be a total piece of crap...

So, I think I should do the following:  Buy the Mac Afric drill press but make sure there is no drift before buying.  Also make sure that they will warranty the product if the belts slip under little pressure or any other possible faults.  If possible I would like to return the item and be refunded if it starts to develop such faults and not just get a replacement unit or for them to fix it.  Not sure if they would back their product this much.

I will go and visit them next weekend and see if they have a lot of faith in their product.....

I had the same issue with a Ryobi bench top drill press, they aren't very powerful at .25hp, but after tightening the belt etc I found the pulleys were not properly tightened onto the shafts.

It solved the problem, but again, under pressure the bits do wander.

Hope this helps

A bit overkill that :D

You forgot to mention that you also have a lathe you dont use

Honestly that Triton is perfect in that table. Never going to remove it, will rather buy another one when the Bosch adn the Cryobi ones break.

Couple of pics I could find of stuff I turned. Bowls are normally long gone before I remember to take a picture.

Check that the pulleys aren't spinning on the shafts. If they do, take them to an engineering shop and have them fix it.

The pulleys could also be coated with gunk and grime?

That's the decision I often face, being one that really enjoys a good quality brand, The stuff they sell is certainly not junk and their service back up is okay, but compare a OEM mac africa to Record ... hmmm. the devil will be in the details, Unless you plan a really heavy duty cycle you should be okay. Second hand you are taking a chance but one can find good deals and equipment that has only been lightly used.

They are also selling branded stuff now like Makita and Atlas Copco - they have good prices on Makita 18v Battery packs.

How do you guys cut wood straight with a jigsaw?

The blade is new but the whole fitting seems to be a bit skew. Very difficult trying to follow a line when the blade does this.
