I made this ring box from pieces of wood I received from someone, some spots still need some work and some angles need squaring up. I am curious what type of wood the red and dark wood are? Both are quite hard and dense. My actual question is what should I use to finish it with?

That's very nice.

I would sand it smooth and then just oil it.

The red: Paduk ?

The dark: Zebrano?

The purple: Purple Heart?

The light: ?

My guess for the purple was also purple heart and the light I thought it was oak. The light wood does not give off the oak smell when planing.

Thanks, my question is what oil I should use. I am not too familiar with wood finishes.

Padauk

Wenge, Panga panga looks similar but has light brown 'speckling'

Purple Heart

can't say what the light wood is - doesn't look like oak, though some open grain specie - perhaps ash.

The red: Paduk ?  ??  Maybe Red or Pink Ivory?

The dark: Zebrano?  Panga Panga

The purple: Purple Heart?  Yup.  Just note that it will turn brown with time.

The light: ?  Cottonwood??

Very Nice Mr Brooks!

I agree, just some BLO (Boiled Linseed Oil).  Or if you want a durable finish (but not necessary for a ring box?), consider a spray-on Polyeurethane (gloss or matt).  I get very nice results with that.  But you do lose some of the wood's warmth / texture.

Right chaps.

I need some advice on how to restore this bench.

It is an old bench from one of the JHB trams that my Dad "borrowed" when they were decommissioned.

I do not have the skill set to take it apart - but I would love to restore it.

So option A is someone in the CT area that can restore this ...

or option B, give me some advice on how to go about this project.

Don't do too much to it in the way or restoration, it has certain personality and presence in that condition.

So consider light sanding and seal the wood and the same for the metal. It's shiny beautiful in it's current state.

I am battliing to take it apart - so was thinking of just that.

But what to use to seal and revitalise the wood ?

The same to to metal ? Do I use a standard black rustoleum paint after a light sand ?

Take the steel work to a sandblaster, paint with Hammerite smooth. No primer needed.

For the steel you're spot on.

Wood, light sanding with 120 paper (soften sharp edges a bit where needed, sand paint splatter off, seal with Woodock 5/10/20 depending on the shine you want it to, my taste would be 5.
