I got to the end of the blue route(21km) where they stopped us. The wind was hectic at the start but ridable after that. If given the choice, I would have carried on riding. I have ridden and raced in worse. I am going to scrutinise the T&Cs re just cancelling the event. I can understand them saying they will no longer take responsibility for your health but to physically stop us?????

O well, fly back to joburg later 10k poorer with very little to show for my hard earn cycling fund money.

Understood, LWB

I guess they have the authority to determine who is on the course for the day and what happens there

The wind is ALWAYS bad under the civic. In 2009 only 2 groups made it through without anyone been blown over. Everyone pushed their bikes thru that point. Thereafter, although windy, it was manageable.

Maybe should have moved the start a bit further after the civic?

Altough I think the race committee probably had just too much to deal with. The wind. The protests. The fire.

Unfortunately it Probably the right decision if you look at it as a whole picture.

its to clear the roads for the emergency services due to high fire risk in strong winds - Hout Bay was already hit hard and lots of people displaced OR lost everything they owned - so if you don't want to waste your 10k go and assist some people that lost everything in the fires in Hout Bay yesterday - it may also change your perspective on life a little

I tend to agree with you, and I think it is really high time that the organisers rethink their general contingency plans. Wind you cannot control but the authorities have known about the protests for some time and it CANNOT be allowed that a world class event be held hostage by protest action of any kind.

I'm really worried that the Argus (ok, ok the CTCT) is going to lose much of its appeal and magic in coming years.

Or maybe its just the dissapointment speaking...

Is the fire in Houtsbay under control? I can imagine the fire and that wind together..... you don't want that on your route.

Would it be stupid to do some cycling on my own today?

Am very sorry for you Belgian one! Hope you get some rides in while you here.

If you do go, watch out for the gusts channeling down side roads. Especially if there's any traffic. But I'm sure you know that!
