And....

Jetline photo's.

Oooh. Y'all want a little hack?

That timetable where you put in your target time and then work out where you need to be by what time....... Write that on a piece of masking tape and stick it to your top tube. Same goes for any of those impossible to remove stickers you might have to stick to your bike, helmet etc. Stick the sticker to masking tape. Stick to bike. Easier to remove.

Bellairs was asked about substitutions on radio this morning and he said the main reason is if you are involved in a crash and unable to speak for yourself they can access emergency medical details for you. I have worked at the race many times and this information is valuable when you treating an unconscious patient.

What's the deal with needing CSA racing licence for the racing bunches, do they check that you have one before you start? Don't really want to buy a year licence just for the Argus

And....

You are receiving this message because you are seeded in one of the first 5 groups to start in the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday.  There are general points to please note and then a few specific to each of the first few groups.

Support Vehicles and Briefing ($ and %)

Only the elite men ($) and elite women (%) start groups will be allowed to be followed by support vehicles.  The briefing for support vehicle drivers and rider representatives will be held at 14h00 on Saturday, 10 March at the Southern Sun Cullinan Hotel (Protea 1 & 2), 1 Cullinan Street Cape Town.  Elite riders need to collect their race packs from the registration at the Cycle Tour Expo before 13h00 on Saturday, 10 March, failing which the race packs will be taken to the race briefing.  The briefing is not compulsory for individual riders. Please note: if you park at the hotel, you will need to pay for your own parking.  For those riders who collect their numbers at registration, please collect them from Collection Counter 1.  There are 2 race numbers and a frame number.

Elite men

This comprises the $ group. You must hold a current valid racing licence in order to ride in this group which starts at 06h15. UCI rules apply to this group.

All riders must sign in at the table in front of the $ start chute in Strand Street.

You may load from the front of the chute.

No juniors are permitted in this group.

In addition to the overall prize, the following age group prizes will be awarded from this group: U23, Elite, 30-34, 35-39

Elite women

This comprises the % group.  You must hold a current valid racing licence in order to ride in this group.

The elite women will ride a shortened 76km route and will race in a women's-only peloton. The start will be in Main Road, Glencairn at 06h15 or as soon thereafter as the commissaire deems it is light enough to start.

Junior women are allowed in this group, but must ride on restricted gears as per UCI rules. Junior girls must arrive sufficiently early to have their machine and spare wheels inspected..

In addition to the overall prize, the following age category winners will come from this group: Junior, U23, Elite.

All other age group prizes will be awarded to the fastest woman in each age group in the 109km event.

The Combined MTB/Cycle Tour prize will also be awarded from this group and not the 109km event.

The % start is timed to get the women to the finish approximately 5 minutes before the leading men.  The commissaire may neutralise the women's race (probably before Chapman’s Peak) if it looks likely that the men will catch the women close to the finish.

The commissaires will pull the entire race convoy off the road if the men's bunch is required to pass.  Details of how this will be managed will be communicated at the Saturday briefing.

& group (06h20)

This is for all male riders with an index under 14 who fall into the following age ranges (age turning in 2018): 15-18, 30-39 and 50+

The following age group prizes will be awarded to the fastest riders from this group:  Junior, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64

@ group (06h23)

This is for all male riders with an index under 14 who fall into the following age ranges (age turning in 2018): 19-29, 40-49

The following age group prizes will be awarded to the fastest riders from this group: 40-44, 45-49

.All other male age group prizes will be awarded to the fastest rider in that age group irrespective of start group.

There is no distinction in ability between the & and @ groups.  The age group breakdown is merely chosen to ensure they are roughly equal in size.

# group (06h25)

This is the start group for the top 30 or so racing tandems.  Although it is likely that all tandem prizes will be awarded from this group, prizes are awarded to the fastest tandem from any start group for each of male, female and mixed tandems.

All women not riding the 76km Elite race will be seeded according to the index in groups starting from 1A at 06h27.

Hospital bend

The descent of Hospital bend (after 5km from the start) is extremely fast and narrow.  You will be forced into only 2 lanes at the top because that is the width that is available at the bottom.  DO NOT attempt to go outside any barriers or to change lanes as this is likely to cause a crash at the point where the road narrows back to 2 lanes.

Cateyes

Most of the first quarter of the route is on freeway with cateyes that are not bicycle-friendly.  When crossing the centre line or riding inside the yellow line, please be careful to avoid them as they are likely to cause a puncture or worse, a crash.  The same applies later in the route in sections of road that have a yellow line.

WAIT, I've been ripped off. I don't recall getting a free copy of the Argus.

They are usually set up at the exit so you can grab one on the way out.

I passed the sinkhole in Camps Bay this morning. I doubt it will be fixed by Sunday. They have started pouring concrete as well on the right lane near Sea Point pool bit Bellairs has said according to the city it will not be ready by Sunday. There will be barriers in place from the circle to direct flow.

By then the bunch has dropped me anyway, plenty of room to maneuver around the hole
