Tygerberg MTB Trails

Was considering membership earlier this year, as I do the occasional night ride (work nearby), and venture out that way 4,5,6 times a year.  Figured that I may put in some more effort if I purchased a membership.  

 

What swayed it for me, was learning that Welvanpas trails were also included in the membership (closer to home).  

 

However, between the steep price increase, and learning that Welvanpas is seemingly no longer included in the permit...well, Stellies has quite a bit lot of free routes on offer, so I figure I'd rather send a donation in the STF's direction...

Now imagine if there was no trail network in within say a 50km drive. How everyone would beg and plead for some farmer to make land available.

 

It is actually very simple: 

 

If you feel it's value for money, buy a permit and enjoy the trails, which are world class.

if you feel it's not value for money, don't buy it. But please, then stop moaning that you don't see it as value for money.

 

These trails don't build themselves, and EVERY year, Patrick Roberts and his crew of trail builders slave away in some crazy wind, harsh sun, and encounter the snakes everyone has all of a sudden become aware of to build new sections and improve existing sections.

That's not even factoring in the likes of Bennet Nel and some of the other blokes around also jumping in to help build some fantastic trails.

Building and maintaining a trail does not come cheap, and as club members we are the main source of funding keeping these trails in the state they are in.

 

Not so long ago, everyone was wining and whinging about the mustard seed at Meerendal, and praising Patrick and his team for keeping the club maintained sections clear of this blight. That too comes at a cost. One can't have your sarmie buttered on both sides, expecting the trails to be tip top, but at a minimum price. 

You must pay to play. If you don't want to pay, please don't play. Rather go ride your bike on the Seapoint promenade. That's free.

Or buy an Activity Permit for less than half the price and ride the multitude of trails mentioned earlier. Or a MTO trails permit and Jonkers. We're very spoiled around here. Tygerberm is not the only one.

I have emailed in the week stating that it is now not within my budget to renew my membership. Didnt get a reply, but also didnt expect to get one.

I wonder if anyone else has.

I.wonder if they are loosing a huge amount of members due to this increase. For members living in the surrounding areas, its an obvious choice, but not if you from another suburb.

 

Just an observation -

 

During the last year I have sent 3 or 4 emails to them.  EACH time it took a week or two to get a reply .... 

 

At the best of times they are out working on the trails ... not manning emails .....

 

 

Would be interesting to know how they monitor the feedback, and when or if or how they will respond .... possibly in next weeks email ?

LOL at all the moaners. Go and join Durbanville Golf Club, you’ll pay a few thousand for 6km worth of “track” to enjoy.

 

My membership pays for itself just by the discount the various places in the area offer for members.

Do you understand the sheer magnitude of costs associated to owning land not even mentioning the manhours and expenses related to maintaining trails?

Do you realise what the membership fees would be if the club had to buy the 140km trails?

Do you realise that 5 phone calls can cancel all the access to the farms?

Have you been to the SGM sharing your concerns? Obviously not. I wasn’t there as well but I was at the AGM this year and guess what, out of 6000 or so members there were maybe 30 members saying their say.

 

If R800 bucks a year or just over R2 per day is too much then rather cycle on the road where it’s free. Even if the fees are R2000 it’s still a bargain. I cannot even build a ramp at my house for R2000.

The increase was definitely explained at the SGM which no one attended (based on all other AGM’s i.e properties, other clubs etc). I’m sure the minutes of the meeting will be available soon. It’s a pity that no one made any noises when the SGM was advertised i.e trying to gather more attendees to vote to keep the fee increase within inflation.

 

I find it offensive that some members openly dish the club and decisions made when there was a perfectly open forum available last week to do it. It’s a privilege to be able to use the trails so we musn’t upset the landowners unnecessarily. They don’t need any more negativity posted all over the net.

I ride this trail network 3 times a week, I won't hesitate to reach into my pocket on 1st December to renew my membership. It's an absolute bargain.

I don't however think it's unreasonable for the club to explain why a larger increase than normal is necessary, To be honest if it's going towards Patricks salary I'm all for it.
