If a dog attacks me while on my bike I will do the same as when a Spaniel ran out of his gate a couple years back and bit my dog that was on a leash. I will get something to protect myself with, and he will eat a liquid diet for a couple of months.

It is his owners responsibility to keep him from harm, by not letting him attack other people and animals. It is my responsibility to protect myself and my animals.

There is a difference between protecting yourselft like you say and going and taking the dog out later because of his actions.

I would be happy to do so, but first, I need to sort the dog out. No biting allowed. If that means I end the dog, then so be it. Then, if the owner is around, he better start running.

After my incident on the way to Simonsberg in May, I got attacked by a sheep dog belonging to a farm labourer. The dog ripped a 12cm gash into my lower leg, almost to the bone. And then I had to stand there and get demoerin with the owner who was reluctant to assist me. He eventually relented after I threatened him with poverty beyond his level of comprehension after I sue his ass.

Then in August, coming down the back of Devon Valley road I got assailed by another aggro mutt. This time I evaded getting bitten, but that made me resolute to rather steer directly for the dog with intent to end it, rather than evade it. I have figured that in trying to get away, the dog gets the advantage, and I get bitten.

No more.

I see dog, I end dog.

I feel your pain man.

I recently got bitten by a boerboel - owner/farmer was 50 m away and couldn't care less. For the sake of peace with land owners and trails going over them I decided not to pursue it further with litigation, as it would probably have ended up with the farmer closing off access to his and neighboring farms and in the process everyone else loses out.

I haven't ridden there ever since the incident.

you okes should come to table mountain, we call the "my mountain"  the owners are so arrogant and careless or care less, when their mutts attack and chase us, it grates me to the bone, but i'm with you if you know your sh!t can't contain itself, then keep it a f'n leash!

having been bitten myself a few times

Coming from a long line of Karoo farmers I can just tell you that a dog can reach a certain point where his bad behavior becomes the norm for him, and that can not be changed. Having to shoot your own dogs due to them killing sheep, etc, is not a joke.

A dog that attacks a human once I can maybe understand, but if it keeps happening that dog has a problem, and is a danger to society. Perhaps he then needs to be dealt with, I don't know.

I am not saying you can not defend yourself, I mention peperspray. But Robbie mentioned "take him out"

If it happens to me and it has, but I was not bitten I managed to keep my bike between me and dog. But did not kick or hit him etc. Just enough "force not to get bitten"

However once the owner arrived he got to the hear all about the law etc etc.

And that is the part I have an issue with.

Take our all your anger on the owner, but if the dog is not longer actively attacking why do it harm it does not know better.

I am the 1st person to stop and tell someone that they dog must be on lead even if I am in my car. As I HAD a staffy that did not like other dogs and took him for a walk and some other clots dog came running up, with the owner going "dont worry my dog is friendly" I replied with well mine is not. (was on a lead and now I had picked him up) Then this B1t%$$ said "well then you must not take your dangerous dog for a walk" WTF

I have the same right, provided I do it as per the LAW. The same LAW you quoted also PRWEVENTS you from "killing" the dog.

WRT to this part

I love(d) dogs < You tollerate them

no bud, you don't get to selectively pick from my statements. In my post I said if the dog ever bites my child, I will K I L L that dog. Whether immediately, or 3 months later... if I find the dog, I K I L L the dog (even if that looks like I get the SPCA involved to euthanize it). My daughter, and her safety is first, foremost, and the only thing I am concerned with. retribution comes in the form of taking the owner for a "chat", and making sure his dog does not ever bite another human being again.

If a person is gung-ho to let their dog run around freely, then face the music when the band starts playing, even if the band playing on the day is me on my MTB approaching.

But again, this thread has deviated from the original topic. I merely said I was more concerned by getting bitten by a dog than a snake. I will not go about killing all dogs just because they're there. I WILL however defend myself and my family, to the point of extreme measures if the situation calls for it. I will not apologize for that. I have been bitten before, so I know what I am talking about.

a couple of months ago, i was on my way to hermanus for a holiday, had my folks with me as well as my wife and kids, kids are aged 3 and 4.

as when i normally go on the N2 i stop at perigrin farmstall, my kids were minding their business in the little park there, when some dwoos decided he's/her's o so friendly dogs can run wild, as you can imagine these dogs barked, and nearly attacked my kids, thankfully some other dude who has dogs and kids, and my father came to their rescue.

now we did not find the owner of these, and i swear had he come my father, who this is first time i've seen that upset since i wrote off he's car when i was in high school, was ready to do some serious damage, lesson learnt from my side 2 angry okes is never a good thing, i played good cop, calmed him down and walked him and the rest of family back to the car.

my kids to date are scared sh!tless of dogs...

i don't mind dogs, i always wanted one, and while i agree the biggest knobs are their owners, i will do what it takes to defend myself and my family against them... all as Robbie has said

Unacceptable, but well done with keeping your cool. I probably wouldn't have been able to, and would've grabbed the nearest rock or piece of wood I can find, and made sure the dogs kept their distance.

I did not select anything from your statement....I said you want to KILL the dog and now you confirmed it.

So small Jack russel gets out and bites your kid ? You gonna go KILL it because it should know better?

Ok, see your logic carry on.....

Clearly you are passionate about dogs. Don't worry I don't foresee Robbie murdering a dog anytime soon, and if he is going to, ranting on this thread is not going to stop him. More importantly, as HDW pointed out - this thread is not about Tygerberg mtb trails and not about killing dogs. Maybe start a new "Robbie please don't kill dogs"-thread to convey your concerns?

Back on track. Has anyone ridden the new additions made to Conties yet? Apparently there are some jumps and fun stuff waiting to be explored. Where exactly is this, and how does it rate?

I promise that no dogs will be harmed in the making of this post...

I wish that TBMTC would build  Berms like Conties. Conties berms has no Brake holes, and they seem so stable and you can can take them at speed.

Meerendal and Hoogekraal (Faircape, and Vergenoegt) berms are too tight in my mind causing people to hit the brakes in the berm and killing the Berm. MDAL they put some plank before berm so the back wheel goes airborne and locks (othe peole, I dont go fast enough to need brakes) then makes a lekka hole in the berm
