Cavendish still no where in Adriatica Race:

To quote him when he was left out of the TDF sqaud:

''The Manx missile added that he’s been following a specific training plan, designed to see him peak in July – and now feels he is in the “perfect place” to perform in France"

Adriatica Criterium - Cavendish = DNF

Adriatica Stage 1 - Cavendish 105th (9 mins back)

Hate to see what is going to happen today when the route hits the bumps

Retaliation for being left out of TDF team

That lower lip dragging on the ground?

Not sure how long the current sponsorship deal is for but if it's not 2+ years you'd have to be worried as Team Owner / Principle. There is only so much the Qhubeka story can paper over the results.

The higher echelons of DD are avid cyclists and always have been. The whole team and TdF sponsorship I think was more a labour of love than anything else.

But the DD world has changed, however, the exposure for DD is invaluable and I guess NTT may be wise to continue seeing as there has been a transfer from DD to NTT of said higher echelons.

When I worked for the DD group the sponsorship of TdF etc was mentioned by a number of clients that were not even cyclists. And with the TdF's profile being raised and especially this year I cant see NTT pulling out just yet.

It isn't about the 'story' it is about the work and impact from Qhubeka (and RBC) as a whole which is actually a key part of DD's involvement.

So yes the pressure is on Doug and the team to perform, but the connection is an intrinsic part of the team/sponsorship programme and doesn't paper over anything.

stage 2 = first road stage - looks panflat and simple until you see the highlights and it's a little bit dusty.

my italian is not that hot, but i assume gibbons made a solo break.

DQS clearly not happy enough holding the MJ at letour, go and crowd the podium with a 123

Of course it's about the story. It's part of their narrative, existence, it is put in to every quote, is used as the reason riders join etc and seems to gets walked out more and more when there is very little else to tell anyone and seems to be used to deflect the other issues. It's the point of the branding on the jersey, to reach people and raise awareness and spread the message and get people to become part of their solution.

The Qhubeka angle of the project is a great thing for a team to do, it's awesome what they are doing and helping change lives. If DD are happy to plow money into a team of professional sportsmen (no ladies team here remember) as well as the large amount of support staff and getting very little coverage or results then more power to them and the team has found an unbelievable partner in the world of professional cycling. One that will bank roll a WT team who doesn't have to rely on it's sporting success is incredible.

Personally I would have thought that if it was solely about the impact and the work of the charity then you could use the huge budget of a team in the NGO space in a much more shrewd way to effect change.

(I know this is not the "correct" way to measure it, but here goes anyway)

DD claim to have donated 75 000 buffalo bikes, the same number is on the qhubeka site so assume that this is all down to them/the sponsorship.

Current price of a donation - R3450 per bike

that comes to the princely sum of R258m

according to this article

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/racing/tour-de-france/tour-de-france-team-largest-budget-262275

the DDD annual budget in 2016 was estimated at Dimension Data – €13.5m

Which is about R210m at today's valuation.

so very crudely, if they just spent the money on buffalo bikes, they probably could have distributed about a million by now.....

Dimension Data is a publicly traded company with an annual revenue of several billion dollars per year. Which means that they are reliant on share price valuation and continuous growth.

So if you believe that they are engaged in something simply for doing something good, then you have probably been mesmerized by the 5 finger salute.

Looks like Cav is moving to Bahrain - Merida, Although a rumour but most likely to happen I think...

This is not a new rumour as Cav is big mates/connected with Ron Dennis of MLaren....... has been mentioned a few times in the past.

Apart from the bikes (if Merida stay on) that is going to give Cavendish the best chance for a swan song season. Rod Ellingworth is going in as Team Principle and was mentor for Cav' at Britsh Cycling, he is / has been a massive influence on him and with Nibbles moving on they haven't got a clear direction at the moment.

It was a move that was on the cards last season but ended up not happening (maybe due to the weird eastern european influence and the Nibbles centric set up).
