Cycling Weeklys TDF rating. Spot on. Do we still have to claim them as a SA team?

The Cycling Podcast summed it up for me perfectly with their final podcast at the TDF:

They were giving the teams scores out of 7 for their performance at the TDF. While discussing Total Direct Energy they said that Direct Energy really competed with TDD for the Transparent Invisible Jersey.

They actually resisted from giving TDD any score.

Something big needs to change at TDD, I have no idea what though.

Maybe with rebranding to NTT they can do some serious house cleaning and bring in fresh blood and some promising youngsters instead of buying old riders for their points...

and bring in fresh blood and some promising youngsters..

Like they did with Meintjies? The whole DD management should just stay away from any promising youngsters.

You don't want to put the boot in but wild card teams are at least up the road in the various doomed breaks. Maybe the DS needs to go and chat to Gianni Savio and see how he gets his riders in to 90% of the break in the Giro.

What makes you say that?

Not fighting, just wondering what you know that we don’t

Just stating the obvious. Going from finishing top 10 in the TDF, twice, to just another mid pack rider. Maybe its not all to blame on DD management, but at the level they play at a rider of his talent should not slip like that. Am I the only one wondering what could have been if Meintjies stayed with one of the top euro teams?

It’s tough for saffas. Weather, isolated, away from home at a young age. Cycling is also a fairly alone sport further isolating a young person. Stranger in a strange land.

Not so much an issue of mental toughness as a. Umber of factors that all contribute.

There are many countries in oeleton that have never won the TdF.

The same argument goes for Aus, NZ and of course Colombia.  But for some reason they have a better sucess rate across all the disciplines than us.

As we all know (like education) it starts off by attracting and nurturing talent from a young age - and to have the right standards in place.

GOOD QUESTION, why did he change from lampre / UAE to TDD?

Surely not just to be “patriotic “

Would think that UAE would have fought to hold onto him

Lampre was a RH move who at the time was his agent...this is now if my memory serves me correctly.

TDD needed a star SA rider and paid him accordingly.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere earlier in this thread's 38 pages... But, why does our Saffa riders not perform so well on the big stage?

I'm patriotic and want them to do good. Here's what boggles me. Cycling is big in SA. Look at any hill outside a town on a Saturday and there's a good chance of a MTB race going on. We have a road season. We have a schools league. We have a heritage of track racing (and lots of venues across the country) and also a history of good names.

But when I followed the Tour, I hardly saw Saffas on the front. Impey won a stage, and he's probably our best. Louis? He was close to Yates as a Young Rider, but looked to not have the necessary bulldog in him.

not sure if you're referring to maincheese being absent from the tour or invisible at the tour, but same point with both!

cyclists do not equal pro cyclists.

Argus is a world leader, hasn't really created an ecosystem of procyclists selected in their teams. Would be disappointed if SpurSeries is not the catalysts for a burgeoning XCO scene in the next decade.

DDD haved a wonderful plan in creating a path for african talent, it has unfortunately failed miserably (I'm told the issues of just getting european visas for eritreans is about half of the cost of having these riders).

As the cycling afficinado K Melua said, there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing, yet zero chinese cyclists on the world tour.

(wait. wtf is this? https://www.procyclingstats.com/team/mitchelton-bikeexchange-2019)
