I think it will take SA coming out a rescission. At the moment its just not economically viable for the up country legends to come ride. The upcountry riders are the ones that are not entering.

Another way they could boost some revenue, offer a half price second lap. If the route is not going to be at capacity, why not fill it with people that you already have covered the costs for?

I did this race this year for the first time, and it was an amazing experience. I am seriously considering doing it again, but it is a serious expense for someone from Joburg. Any experienced Hubbers have some tips to lessen the blow? I have not yet entered and apparently it is closing soon.

I have not done it, but if you dont hire a car and just uber from airport, that saves some cash.

Book flights now, if on disco use flight booster.

Look at Air B&B for lekker deals now.

Maybe a hubber has a spare room that could cut down on costs.

the entry itself should be least of your concern as there will be plenty plenty for sale closer to the time, may even pick up cheaper than original.

try and source a cheap flight (black friday sale might be worth while waiting for).

also look at airbnb for a budget stay as close to town/city bowl as possible to be able to cycle to and fro registration and the actual race.

uber to and fro airport and anywhere else when required.

some advices from a kaapie  ^_^

There are actually 3-5 rooms, I am sure my folks wont mind for a hubber. They even lent a few bikes out to UK hubbers in past. Depending if we clear out a bike room or two.

Thanks, my main concern was getting an entry now and then being committed to going and everything. So I will see if I can get a bargain on flights etc. then make the decision a bit closer to the time.

Sadly the link to Iqbal Surve and his now not-even-useful-for-the-puppy-to-***-on "newspaper" has, for me anyway, burned that connection.

Sad.

its a bit like the Baseball "World Series" whch originally so named because the newspaper " The New York  World" sponsored it. The newspaper I don't think is involved anymore (and its seems is disputed that the series was named after it) but its still called " World Series".

I would find it difficult if I didn't have family in CT to stay with and awesome folk to catch a lift with who don't rip me off for petrol and hop out to make sure the bikes are OK every hour.  In the past I've done the plane and bus thing which is getting pricey.  But the last couple of years the trip down has become a whole lot more fun because, "bike, bike, bike", is all the talk we do and "bike!, bike!, bike!" is all we look out for on the road.

Would be cool if hubbers in CT could maybe start a thread offering accommodation should they have to spare?

For me, It's just part of my life. It just simply is part of my budget. With the birth of the twins in June I decided to stop racing for a bit and am not racing at all this year or next except for the argus. It will be the first time in 28 years that I am just going down to just ride. Instead of my usual sub 3 goal I am setting a sub 4 goal or just finish. If I didn't have a record to keep, I would really reconsider due to costs.
