On the tracking thing, I had a look and there is a Racetech app that you can download that enables you to track various riders as they cross the various tracking points. Check it out in Play Store and whatever the equivalent is for iOS.

Interesting, I see race time for 1B and 1C is faster than 1A.....

There were a few super strong okes in 1C who raced ahead, passed the whole of 1B and then caught 1A as well.

After smits it was one mega group mixed with 1A, 1B and 1C riders - whole story split again at Chappies

With only 2 minutes between groups always likely to happen this year as well

coupled to 1A having many many lazy riders who probably got lucky off a single event beta.

Even 1E caught 1A lead by Paris Basson and Nick Lammond! What were they doing seeded in 1E.

This whole CTCT and PPA seeding is a total fiasco

Real-time tracking is tricky as cell signal isn't great on sections of the route on the southern peninsula. Not sure if nowadays they're exposing when cyclists go over the various timing mats out on the course, which would allow for a similar progress update as what you've mentioned for 94.7.

If it is for family use friend-finder or Watts-app I use Watts-app when cycling alone and it is very easy, uses minimal data and is accurate to a few meters.

to use:

Open Watts-app select the person you want to share location with> Select the paper clip> Select Location> Select share Live Location> Select for how long it is live, normally 15 mins, 1 hour or 8 hours.

Do the ride meet up and turn off via the same way. Works a treat, and as I say it uses minimal data and your battery should be fine.

My 2 cents.

Who cares it is a funride after all.

Tried this but it seems to include everyone around the area? Must be doing something wrong?

Or they were seeded better and dropped back?

My Mom uses the racetec app to track us. Due to where we stay she see's us at the end of the blue route and then the Noordehoek intersection that I believe is currently a construction site. She then goes back to Fish Hoek and checks the app to see when we finished.

Garmin tracking will only send your position whe there is cellular network coverage. Theres quite a few holes in coverage around the peninsula.

Racetec tracking isn't live so its a bit unreliable. Whoever is tracking you has to give themselves a 5min window to get to the designated spot ahead of schedule

I think Spot Gen3 is still the best option but expensive at R4000 for the unit and $300 annual subscription.

Whatsapp tracking falls over if you lose cellular network. Garmin LIve track at least refreshes so but it can also fall over.

In addition, it happens that it doesn't pick up riders at some of the mats along the route, then people get worried and start panicking etc.

But, it is better than nothing, and between it and my Lezyne's live tracking, wifey should have a less stressful year this time :)
