they'd have it figured out if it had an aero shape at the grip area as well.

I regularly ride on the top tube, I sit sideways on the top tube casually as most do at a coffee stop or pre race start or whatever.... I'm over 80kg. I ride a bike pretty hard. I have never had an issue of a top tube cracking, let alone three times in the same area regardless, and thats on numerous bike brands... if this bike manufacturer makes a paper thin top tube for whatever reason I don't think that it would be safe to ride even when sitting on it properly. The torsional and directional forces that go though bike in certain types of impacts with potholes, speed bumps etc can be instantaneously huge, we (all cyclists) also bunny hop things like speed bumps, potholes and dodge glass when seen at the last minute... I would hate a massive failure of a pretty large portion of the bike to just give way in an emergency stop.

 

Do I think Canyon should warrantee the frame after being sat on improperly: No

Do I think it shouldn't have broken in the first place: Yes

 

FYI I have also seen them outright refuse a blatant warranty case (1st claim) under the BB area on the basis that "our frames are made very strong and they can't crack there" 

 

 

 

Ya wol (see what I did there)  they are German and really sure of themselves so I sink that they are entitled to take that position. Of course they shouldn't just dismiss a manufacturing flaw like a void or resin dry situation in the layup. Happens to the best.

 

technically speaking none of the OP's frames broke, they cracked. However looking at the direction of the cracks along the top tube I'm wondering if there wasn't a problem during the assembly of the bikes. Were the frames clamped by a too short seat post and excessive torque applied to the cranks causing the top tube to deflect in a direction its not designed to. Then have a 86kg stastic load being applied in a dynamic situation by an almost pro rider in Jo'burg, doing 90oddkm/hr down Sandton drive.

My worry would be if sitting on it cracks it you better hope you never lose footing and fall on it as I have heard carbon does not show up on x-ray so it's going to be a long process removing it from your rear and chomy. ????

Luckily I ride a mtb the seat is comfortable I don't have to sit on anything else.????

Over the weekend, saw a chap sitting on this top tube... on a MTB doing about 35kmh... almost cracked my own top tube because i laughed so hard i almost fell off... oh man! you can't make this **** up...

Let’s say you decide to become a scientist. Go to school for 7 years. You get your PhD in marine biology. You then cut your teeth going around the world working at various facilities until you make a name for yourself.

 

Sooner or later Sir David Attenborough notices you and invites you along on one of his quests. You go get funding from the National Geographic and the BBC. You commission a deep sea sub and head off to the Mariana Trench. You launch your sub and go to the bottom of the ocean at more than 10km deep. Taking the old man with you, reaching your life long dream.

 

Even if you do that, you will find a human down there acting like a complete twat.
