in your opinion. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Suunto 5 year warranty including a few free replacement batteries, watch straps, hr belts, services and a charger cable are a game changer to me.

I too am a Garmin fanboy but I must admit I am seeing more and more activates on strava being recorded with a suunto of sorts. My BIL just got one(a watch) and it seems pretty lekker and it has some nice features and he got one of the basic ones.

yea, probably my opinion but 2 of my friends had troubles with their Suunto watches, was such a up and down thing to get it sorted and eventually gave up, both opted for Garmin products, one got a Instinct and the other got an Edge, still a Garmin Fan.(personal preference)

I'm sorry I don't get the whole Garmin Fanboy thing.

FWIW I've got a suunto spartan trainer and it's been completely faultless. And it cost under 3k. Battery life is great. About 14 hours with the gps and hr monitor going. Syncs with my HR strap no problem.

My only 2 minor complaints is that backlighting is a bit poo and the opical HR thingy is a waste of time outdoors. Hence the strap.

I've always had issues with watches in general - broken/lost/stolen - so stopped wearing them.

Then when I joined discovery and vitality in 2015 I needed something to count steps for vitality and bought one of the original Fitbit Charges - it broke, 3 times.

In 2017 when I wanted to get a bit more serious about things, stumped up the cash for a Garmin fenix 3 sapphire and yes the strap has broken, the little loop to hold the strap has broken more than once. But other than that it hasn't left my wrist - running, hiking, climbing, swimming, snorkeling, showering - it goes everywhere. It's been banged on more rocks than I can count, the face hasn't got a single scratch; the battery life is still good, I charge it every week or 2 depending on how much gps and hr related activity I do.

Therefore Garmin products will get my vote, the latest fenix is obviously prohibitively expensive but they have a number of more affordable options depending on your needs.

Just started running and after 3 runs I got tired of carrying my Edge520 in my hand. Popped off to Sportsmans Warehouse today and bought a Garmin 735XT as it had the best features in the price range.

Normal price R6299, sale price R4599 less 25% for Vitality healthy gear is R3599 (capped at R1000 back). Then I signed up for the device booster benefit which can give another 50% of the watch value back if you meet your weekly goals.

Even without this I couldn't justify a Fenix 6 Pro for 10k+ when this effectively cost R3.6k.

Exact route to running gadget maturity I followed. After nearly dropping the 520 in a drain when it fell out of my running belt pocket, I got the 735 on a massive discount just before some new models was released. Super happy with it.

Additional advantage was that I immediate got substantially quicker - my running route is like a maze here in the suburb, with a 90-degree turn every 100-150m. The 520 took shortcuts with the sampling interval - 735 not so while running. Image that feedback 1.5 weeks before your first 70.3...

Dont think I was ever more happy with a gadget I bought after opening that first "735 run" on Strava.

I also realised that the Garmin slogan "beat yesterday" is actually the absolute truth, one should just throw money at the problem instead of training harder :)

I did notice the speed, I was 20s/km quicker on first run!

I am on my third garmin fenix .I buy them in a duty free area substantially cheaper .Garmin vivoactive is a lot cheaper than a fenix and does everything you need .The fenix 5x is the older model but is still sold at good prices and i found it to be an excellent product even after two years of full time use .All three of my garmin,s had to get new straps after two years use .I bought new straps for 29€ and it takes a full minute to put the new ones on

Interesting point albeit unintentional....

“on my third Garmin fenix”

Over how many years and why so many?

Garmin for me. Had the Fenix 3, upgraded to the Fenix 5, then upgraded to the 945.  Use the Edge 520 when cycling and the Fenix watches for swimming, running and triathlons.  Watch gets used twice a day 4 days a week and once a day on the others.  Since I was on the Fenix 5 and now 945 have not used a HR strap for running or triathlons for at least 3 years now and is accurate enough for performing in HR Zones.  Watch lives on my wrist 24/7.

Garmin gps tracking much better than Suunto especially with regard to open water swimming and the optical heart rate much more accurate.

As for straps, it's a sports watch, so gets abused with sun, sunblock, sweat and chlorine from the pool.  It is a consumable, is plastic and prone to wear and tear and eventual breaking and becoming brittle.  As soon as I get a new watch, i go buy extra straps of alliexpress for next to nothing.  So should it break I always have spares.  Then if I sell the watch to upgrade, I throw in the additional straps with the sale.

My 2c look at the garmins. There are some Fenix 5's going for a decent price (livable price) now that the 6 is out.

Im waiting for mine to be delivered, upgrading from a samsung gear fit 2 thigamajig.
