Ive tried searching the forums (and the net) but Im struggling to find any recent info on having a Vasectomy without going broke. Has anyone had one recently? Where does one go and How much?

I know first port of call should be your GP who will probably refer you to a urologist for the 10-15min procedure. But some of the pricing I am seeing is R15000? Surely not. R1000/min for some ball play from an older gentleman, I dont have money for that (but if you do and thats your game, Power to you!)

It seems that only if you on the all bells and whistles option of medical aid will they cover that. Surely there must be some more affordable method for us mere mortals who have to pony up ourselves and (thank you to our kids who we love very very dearly BUT dont want more)  dont have thousands of rands lying around.

I have seen some family planning clinics do it for free/minimal amounts but they are in rather "rough" areas... at least the ones near me. Im trying to find the middle ground... the working mans ball snipper!

Finally... how long before I can grace the bike seat again?!

Id really appreciate any input.

I assume you don't have Medical aid OP?

Mine was fully covered by medical aid.

Edit:

Recovery time depends from person to person, I had quite a bit of discomfort, was back at work on the third day, spent quite a bit of time walking on site, and it was not fun. Had a larger (quite) than normal testicle.

Mine cost me the initial R1000 for the doc to fondle my privates and then the hospital plan covered the rest.

I have heard of some docs that will do the procedure in their consulting rooms which will probably be cheaper.

I was back at work the next day, but was rather uncomfortable for a week after, plus about 2 weeks after that I had a rather large testi.  think it was close to 4 weeks before I ventured back onto the bike.

I am following this thread. My wife has been pestering me to go since we had the twins. To say I am scared is an understatement.

I am also scared to google it.

This is me... I also have Twins.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful... Initially my medical aid (which is a basic hospital plan) didn't look like it would cover anything. Im going back and querying this. Im probably in for co payments and everything not medical aid rates but thats better that nothing at all!

Glad the feedback is pretty positive and yes, regardless of the price it will be cheaper than another kid.

Looking at your title....I think very few have done it... But we have already seen that a fair number have had it done

Actually I think many family men have done it but keep it to themselves............

I see "cost" being one of your main concerns. Well, do you buy "cheapie" parts for your fast bicycle? Don't mess with this one going the "cheapie" route, could turn rather nasty......

I hear you, and trust me Im not going cheap for cheap sake... if I could afford to go for the best all the time I would but im trying to do the best with what I have which is not a lot.

Typical bike riders. No mention of when they can have sex again. More concerned about getting on the bike.

to answer that... It depends.

:P

Mine were not so lekker for about 2 weeks after. Any sort of "repetitive motion" had me in pain for a while afterwards.

Also - the period that needs to elapse before it's "safe" to have no other barrier in place is ~6-18 months, depending on how "sticky" your sperm are. There's a spoeg-wallet that continually gets fed by the ballas, and even with the conveyor belt switched off, the (the sperm in the sac) can have a life of up to 18 months.

That's why it's important to get test(i)ed before you remove the wrapper.

what med aid are you on? If it's done in hospital, the only part you'll have to cover yourself is the gap between what the specialists charge and what your med aid covers (that 100% / 200% stuff) as well as a deductible / co-payment if your plan stipulates it. The hospital account (bed and breakfast, essentially) will be fully covered by the med aid, minus any co-payment or deductible, if there is one.
