2019 Cannondale scalpel, the Land Rover of the bike world?

I would rather push Jacob Zuma around in a wheelbarrow than drive a Toyota.

I have noticed your persistent grip with Toyota. Every 2nd post I see of yours is about how you think its the worst brand in the world.

Bizarre.  I dont think I've ever mentioned Toyota on the hub.

But hey, if you like your Toyota!  YAY FOR YOU!! COROLLA FOR THE WIN!

Howzit bikehub. First time poster.

First off, I don't know if this post is a rant or me just venting. Maybe I just need some advise?

I like Cannondale. I have a few Cannondale bikes, a Cannondale t-shirt and I might even name my new worshond ocho. I'm no pro but this new Scalpel is the best mountain bike I have ever ridden. Its fast, comfy and sexy as hell. I even look back over my shoulder every time i walk away..............BUT just like my Land Rover there is always something wrong with the thing. In the first three months it has been back to the shop five or six times. The crank has loosened itself on three times already giving it 10mm side play.

This is a common affliction of the SRAM BB30 cranks. Mine has done the same. A drop of LOctite Blue threadlocker or blue silicone gasket sealer should help it behave. Mine hasn't come lose again

The bottom bracket bearings has already been replaced.

the BB is an FSA unit and its a cheap one too. I agree they should do better here. VP components makes a nice cheap unit that uses angular contact bearings. Theses are preloadable and last long. Alternatively get a BB386EVO thread together cartridge type from WheelsManufacturing or Tokan TF4630 BB386EVO for 30mm cranks. Don;t be tempted by shop salesman to buy the Std WheelMFG PF30 thread together unit as it won't fit. The Wheelsmfg press fit unit does work.

During race to the sun the lefty ocho popped a seal relieving itself of some oil. Fixed under warranty but now the stanchion has a couple of very light scratches and the anodizing has faded.

sounds like this part should be replaced under warranty

Another issue I have is the gx eagle. The shifting is plain *** and seems like it just can't be indexed to perfection. I have been assured by the bike shop mechanic that it is set the best it can be set, but its still clicking as Murphy would have it in the 3 cogs I use the most. First world problems I know but on every ride now between the click click click from the derailleur and the sffffffffffffffffff noise from the front hub I feel kinda cheated. I mean for the kind of money you pay, should it not be perfect or do I have a bad case of buyers remorse?

The indexing can be set properly. Sounds like the cable may not be running smoothly. Have they replaced the housing recently?

Is the derailleur hanger tight?

If you crank has play then it will cause the chain line to wander. get that sorted. When tightening the crank may sure the preload adjuster on the crank is dialed out to minimum preload.

Are all the seals and dust cover and spacer in the correct placement?

Scalpels and Discovery 4 are aimed at the same target market as well.

I could have bought Cannondale for what I spent on my Discovery - learned the hard way that I am not in a position to drive a Disco.  Beautiful to drive though

I do own a cannondale but I fixed it

Disco 3 I'd put there with the "do not touch box"....   So, 3 or 4?

I've spent a bit of time driving a Disco 3. Its great of you need space and want to do proper off road stuff, but as a daily driver it and any other massive tank like SUV are beyond awful. The size is a problem in parking situations, its top heavy and chows fuel. I also hate the barely legible/visible dash instruments.

Is that a cobble gobbler seatpost? On an MTB. What wizardry is this? Tell me more.

want to do proper off road stuff,.

That's debatable. It's a decent overlander, but not a proper off roader.

Make no mistake, I'll go rock crawling in a lifted, built disco2 though. Or an old RRC.

Whats that, people who rarely ever venture off road or need space to lift many children?

The mountainbiking by cheque book crowd and the overlanding by chequebook crowd all belong to the same whatsapp group.

You are more likely to see a dusty Scalpel than a dusty disco though.

Can only comment on the "mechanic" and the Eagle GX.

My GX ran SMOOTH for many months.  Had an incident on the trail (no marks on the bike though) and it started making a noise "between gears", just between 5 and 6 ... adjust the cable and it would go up or down a couple.

Took it to bike mechanic.  He started by checking the hanger, which needed the slightest of tweaks.  Serviced and re-adjusted everything, been running SMOOTH since.

So I would also recommend a "decent mechanic" .....

As for "Landy" references .... my neighbour had one, and we spent way too much time fixing the darned thing !!  Cost him a fortune to keep on the road.  He wanted to sell it for spares - litterally !  Another friend insisted on buying it "as is", knowing the history ..... 6 years later and this friend is still driving it without any issues ....  so maybe you need to FIX this Canondale for the next owner ...    :whistling:

well i drive a toyota (2 infact, a cruiser and a lexus) no problems, and a cannondale (trigger) for 4 years now, and i am heavy and do give it as best i can, especially on the down hills, and it has not given any trouble, except for the odd bb creak when i have to drag my but up a hill.

so comparing a dale with a landy is a bit harsh in my opinion.

any bike that can take what I have given my dale is strong. He is heavy but he is my brother....

Post em up.

Might as well make you Toyota drivers work for a living.   Cant only have the Uber drivers repping.

Original comment about Zuma and a wheelbarrow stand.  :w00t:

Simon123, my advice is this. "When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging"  The Hub is not the place to bull#h1t, you have been sprung, take it on the chin and move on chap.
