Throwback Thursday...... When We Were Young

I still have those same silver/grey S-Works shoes, wore them yesterday for a 5 hour ride in the hills above Opotiki!

....and, come to think of it, still have the same XTR pedals! Been on at least 6 or 7 different bikes now.

I have a pair of SPD pedals now that I've had for a least 10 years, and before that I had a pair of SPD 747's that also lasted about 10 years.

26 inch wheels too. It was a weird time for everybody...

Yes those were the days when everything still dependent on the cyclists, now it depends on the bike.

These bikes of mine had tongues hanging out back in the day.

MTB didnt really exist in SA then. Okes that had MTB 's were few and far between.attachicon.gif1577076894039.jpeg

I had a couple of those Cannondales and also had one of those Giant TCRs in the same colours...

A bit of 94.7 history.  In 2006 Team Konica Minolta were unable to get sponsored tyres from the importer of the specific brand they were using due to shipping delays.  Team owner John Robertson found a few entry level Continental Ultra Sport wire bead training tyres in his garage and they were fitted to the bikes of Martin Velits and Yolandi du Toit in last minute desperation.

Velits won the Elite men's race and Du Toit won the Elite women's race of the 94.7 on these low cost tyres ahead of all the fancy pro race tubbies and high-tech fold-ups used by the riders who finished behind them. Says a lot for the brand...

Did he change the wheels as well because how did he fit clinchers to tubbie rims?

I have won a few races on Gatorskins but non on my GP 4000............... Ok the gators are fitted to my Tandem and the GP4000s on my single bike and I am not a great Vet racer but better on the tandem.

Point is, I don't think the fact that they had "low cost" tyres made a difference or made them work harder for the win. Not for a race like that anyway.
