    • No, because most of the 150km of the trails are generally speaking, smooth as tar.

attachicon.gifmajik-1.jpg

late to this party but i wanted to say that:

i'm pretty sure she (Auntie Andrea) is not talking about the trails in the hills and surrounds. This woman has been audible about bikes on that piece of paved sidewalk inside majik and around the bottom dam since i can remember. she lives in that suburb...it is her pet project. You used to be able to find her there (before the gates) on a friday night chasing bums out there by herself.

i get it...there are signs explicitly stating that no bikes are allowed inside and people still ride there.

There are also alot of Karens who live in that area and they complain ALOT. Hell, the 8 odd corona cases in that area are all in oude westhof because a few housewives couldn't clean their own homes during lockdown...I kid you not. she should go out around 10am and see how people there ignore the exercise window instead haha.

anyway, etiquette has always been that if you come down majik...near the end ...you get off your bike and WALK out the gate...or if you are going up to the spar side...you either use the sidewalk on the road outside or you push your bike through the park.

My inlaws live in that area. Antie Andrea caught me at the majik bottom gate about 5 years ago just as I got back on my saddle inside and she GAVE it to me proper lol. "ou vrou met n nat broek" style. was around the time they fenced that all in.

Also....willing to disclose her address by accident haha  we all have lots of TP left over i'm sure...

May I ask where have you seen this clarification on the 5km radius still in play?

Dep Minister Obed Bapela while being interviewed....

I was more concerned about the surfing, but this popped up.

You cannot just drop bombs like this... Sources?

As just came across our MTB WA group, the lvl 4 documented restrictions specify 5km, but the lvl 3 do not, so they can TSEK until that changes. Nothing said on the radio is official anyway.

See pics.

Yes again a minister who does not understand the rules that was published commenting.

Noting about a 5km being said.

THIS is the type of problems that are being picked up when you read the 29 April Gazette next to the 29 May Gazette.

Instead of publishing a "complete" document, the latest Gazette only published the changes to the Level 4 document ....

The new one says nothing about "5km" .... does this mean it has not changed, or that it has fallen away?

IF SO, then there are many more items that did not change ... an absolute legal mine-field ....

Practically speaking .... maybe the level of civil unrest, and the total inability to stop it, has led to a very fast change to what is effectively Level 2 ..... The sad part, this very civil unrest is part and parcel of the various hotspots....

I am very conflicted about this .... I am GLAD for my friend that can start working again on Monday !!  Bitterly disappointed in the reality that the behaviour of some cyclists\runners\walkers may have contributed to some of these hot-spots .....

FINAL WARNING FROM LANDOWNER !!

The image below confirms the current view on The Traverse....what a blessing !! This members only corridor, critical to our Durbanville residents, remains a contentious one, with members not respecting the most basic of rules, and landowner conditions.

Today we received a mail from the landowner, as said, critical to the larger network of trails. He informed us of a host of recent incidents since re-opening on Monday, where riders are starting their rides as early as 5 am in the morning, and others being on his land still at 8 pm at night. Besides these, there has also yet again been those who purposefully go off our marked trails, and onto farmland that is for good reason not part of our route.

We hereby inform all club members of one last warning given to us by the landowner, to ensure our members respect riding times, and riding only on the marked route. No further negotiations or concessions will be made by the landowner.

ALSO NOTE, THAT ANY MEMBER FOUND GUILTY OF A TRANSGRESSION OF AFOREMENTIONED, WILL SEE HIS / HER MEMBERSHIP REVOKED.

For those that has been with us for some time, will see a similar pattern here, which eventually cost us the famous Kliprug trail.....

In general this has been a bad week for our club with a number of incidents reported by various landowners, and still sightings of members bringing along non members unto the trails. As always, the largest portion of us are not at fault here, and the actions of the minority are to blame.....sadly, as in past, this could very well be to the detriment of the whole club.

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST AND SPREAD THE WORD THAT EACH MEMBER HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO ABIDE BY THE CLUB'S VERY SIMPLE AND BASIC RULES.

Thanks for posting this. The shear arrogance of people breaking the rules as they wish is mind boggling. The closing of the Kliprug route was caused by one of these morons. The upshot of it all is that the bulk of the members who are and, have been abiding to the basic rules , which by implication also incorporate respect and decency towards the landowners had to pay ( and are still paying) the price when this route was closed a few years ago .Our society has not only been infected by Covid 19, but also by rogues.

Unfortunately it seems we need to loose access now and then for people to wake up (Kliprug too long ago now)

I would really like it if the club makes an effort, even if just for a few days, to actively police the trails and punish the morons who break the rules. I'm sure there won't be a shortage of volunteers who will assist!

I haven't ridden The Traverse in a few months, but I don't remember ever seeing signs on the trails indicating the times - which are different to the rest of the network. Signs, if they haven't already been planted, would be super useful. I made the mistake of accidentially riding The Traverse after hours a few years back.

The Traverse is also largely open/no locks (many of the trails are now unlocked). There's no accountability. You can't rely on "the goodness" of people to not cause problems. I've witnessed a lot of rogue riding on the trails. It happens all the time, it's just that some landowners are more sensitive than others. The Traverse needs access control, and ideally access control that also logs who goes in and out. This could be a hugely fun electrical engineering project (LoRaWAN anyone? but that's another story).

There's also a trade-off between the price of club membership vs the honour of being in the club and access to the trails. As the membership price goes up and the trail access becomes (or remains) easy, more people will be left with only the honour* component supporting their membership - and therefore the club will have more rogue riders. It's an optimisation problem. The trails don't need to be Fort Knox. They just need to be sufficiently difficult to access so that people become more likely to join the club.

So yes, I think the club needs to put some effort into securing the trails - and I'm not knocking the board here, it just needs to be done.

The thing is for those that don't want to comply with the rules it does not matter what you put up, because people break locks, go over fences, or will just find another spot to get within the perimeter.

And a lot of people don't want to be that guy / girl that calls out bad behaviour because they not looking for trouble.  And those that are members and that HAVE read the emails about only riding sunrise to sunset and still don't care.. they will just say they paid for a full year and were prevented to ride for 2 months so now they just getting back some of their fee's value, and riding when it suits them.

The answer.. probably closer to all members being "that" guy or girl that calls out bad behaviour when we see or hear about it...{but that is not going to happen that often as some of us probably know of people disregarding other rules and turning a blind eye)
