To be fair - TIA - the ban won't change anything unless City of Cape Town sends some overzealous guards to enforce the new rules.

South Africans see laws as a rough guidelines 🙂

You're looking at it backwards. The laws are only enforced on those that will comply. Like when riot police descended on HB beach to stop people from walking on the beach. Those same riot police are strangely absent when there is an actual riot going on.

So how's this? On Suikerbossie they have been trapping every weekend for the last 3 weeks at least (I personally have absolutely no problem with this)

But..... There's a clearly visible traffic van close to the top which looks to me like it's a decoy. Coz the actual trap is much lower down. 😄

They have also been having regular road blocks. Funny thing is when they see my Malinois's head out the side window I get waved past.

I was nearly on a one way trip to heaven last weekend.

On the descent into HB I see the lights up ahead and start slowing it goes green and i maintain about 50. There's a motorcyclist stopped about 300m short of the road block who then decides to make a U-turn as I'm coming toward him. I missed the bike by mm's . Rider probably didn't have a valid license (probably still on a learners or the bike wasn't registered but he clearly didn't want to have to answer any questions). These raps are all in affluent areas and still no moving violations being pulled over unless its a taxi. So many drivers on their phones especially the MyCiti bus drivers!!

I'm so scared of that hill. I'm always super careful going down there. Which is probably actually more dangerous coz I'm likely to be collected one day by some chump who hits his drops with his knee coz he's trying out the Froome tuck for the first time.

Ok hijack off.

You sound defeated. This isn't just about cyclists being entitled to things. The negative consequences, if we don't drastically change the way we move are huge (regardless of the mode, include walking, skating, public transport, scooter, and cycling as some examples). Those kiddies might not even have a beach to park at if we don't. And I'm sure they'd have far more fun and be healthier catching the train or riding their bicycle for part of that journey.

The reaction by some to the promenade ban is a reaction to this and the City's lack of meaningful change in transport, than it is to the actual luxury of using the space. The ban includes more than bicycles too.

I feel defeated in this regard for sure - not just in terms of the absence of political will to embrace cycling which I really believe is one of the most important things that could be done for the environment and for the experience if living in towns and cities and public health and all the other benefits we are all know, but in terms of the environmental concerns as a whole. There are a few climate scientists and economists in my circle and they all express a form of dysphoria, a malaise of anxiety and sometimes even pointlessness in response to the state of things.

Speed traps seem to be from about 7:30am, bikes have just started arriving earlier, from 5:30am this week there was one idiot in the dark. Most arrive at about 6:30am. Largely timing and intensity correlates to airing of motorGP - boys are frothing on a motorGP weekend.

*note to self - see if I can get my new rescue to look like a Malinois

It's two people wide. I support that too.

Still puzzled by why they didn't build the planned bike lane on the parallel Main Road when they renovated it, however. An opportunity lost. Perhaps why I'm so prickly about losing cycling space, when the City has said that they're cycling friendly.

They did not build a cycle lane through St J ames and Kalk Bay in favour of more on street parking.

this was a BIG fail. it was possible as in places there are 3 portions for pedestrians to walk and cyclists need to play with traffic on the road. It wasn't straight forward though, but the will wasn't there. I know even using the rail reserve was looked at, but that belongs to PRASA so it doesn't matter how viable it could be, it just won't happen.

For once common sense prevails. Now how about the 2 ton vehicles doing 50km/h down beach road, maybe time to remove one of those six lanes for a bike lane :)

Time will tell, if the small portion of cyclists making the trouble don't take this as a bit of a scare and there are entitled biker vs pedestrian incidents they will be reported way quicker now. Just need people to act lekker,

Think the issue are the eScooters zooming along, they just get put with bikes as the issue.

with that logic we can then lump pedestrians in with motorcars and taxis
