I had a look at the list on CSA and seem to be a small community of coaches in SA level 1 through 3. A little disappointing would have thought more would be involved in development.

I was one of many (>50) that did level 1 in 2021, which cost R500 at the time. It was an online course, and all theory. Certainly not enough to call oneself a coach; as there’s so much more to learn and experience.

A number of former pros and current younger Elite/U23 riders (presumably Sports Science students) completed the course. Perhaps they’re setting themselves up for a future coaching role.

The admin to get a licence might prevent them from converting, which means they can’t do level 2, as a level 1 licence is required. I’m working full time, so my “coaching” training is still developing. Will apply for my licence one day, once I get all the admin together.

Am I misinterpreting this list? Either way you are out making a difference in the cycling community.

As one of the few (or maybe the only) women on this thread, thanks for this.

I just feel like there’s an awful lot of men saying what should have been done and to be quite honest barring a few comments most really seem to be leaning towards SNB and how he should have enjoyed a “softer” outcome. This is a really difficult thread to read and digest.

As a woman, and mother of a girl child, there are many things I teach her and coach her in. Life stuff, mainly. I can’t coach her in cycling (or any other sport). I rely on ethical, stand-up people to do this.

Sadly, I rely on my relationship with my daughter to let me know if things go weird, because the reality is you really can’t trust anyone outright.

I am thankful that the custodians of the victims in this case had enough wherewithal to believe their wards and come forward with the information. As a woman I cannot stress enough how hard it is to be taken seriously about this kind of thing. Even when you are speaking out to another female.

What SNB did is disgusting, immoral and despicable. He deserves his lot. His misconduct has been proven, and wherever this may lead, I’m proud of those kids and their custodians, and find myself thinking about those who perhaps weren’t believed or whose custodians didn’t want to act on it for whatever reason, or who brushed it off as some sort of “misunderstanding” or imagined scenario.

YOH! This comment hit hard. Had to check my male privilege after reading a woman's perspective.

I did he Level 1 last year and it cost R1500-00. We had all the other hoops added as well so it was a it more than R1500-00. It was pretty much a recap of knowledge already gained, But.... its a necessary step if you have higher ambitions in the coaching space so you follow the bread crumbs.

People who have a BSc Sports Science can take the 4 month Level 3 diploma immediately and skip levels 1 and 2

I think you can take the courses directly through the UCI and pay in Swiss Francs but you need a letter of endorsement from CSA.

There are many more questions and opinions on this matter. However it is extremely difficult to discuss a matter so complex in not only human nature but also in legal nature on a forum like this.I do think that CSA did the right thing.

The administrative side of the law and the criminal side and the possible civil actions that might flow from this scenario are endless.I do feel for the victims(the minors) in this case and I hope they will find peace in one or other way.

I make the above observation from a legal perspective having practiced criminal law after being a prosecutor in the childrens court for nearly 30 years.

You ever attend the high court, or any court? Or even watch an episode of LA law?

Did you notice the opposing counsels?  Both sides well qualified and both sides believe themselves to be right? Yet….only one side wins, does this mean the other side is less qualified?

do you have knowledge of who has and who does not have law degrees?

edit: just to be crystal clear as some may have missed this not so subtle point: don’t think anyone is saying mr bester is innocent, just that it could have been dealt with better.

I think you need to lay off whatever boom you are smoking.

Dad of a preteen girl here and very cautious of how we guide her in navigating this crazy world out there. Totally agree with everything you have said.

Except this bit, "few" and "most" is a massive stretch and most definitely not the case.

Let the accusations of mansplaining fly.
