Had an incident today that left me fuming, was a motor bike that I nearly had an accident with while driving. I better understand some of the anger, both ways.

I was driving to work (in my car). Got to a set of robots that we out. So becomes a four way stop right. I stop and wait my turn. While I was waiting I saw a Jimny blow through the intersection left to right from my perspective, ultimately a good thing as it primed me for other muppets. I was about half way through the intersection, right hand turn, when I become aware of a blue shape streaking toward me on the left. I slam on the brakes. It is some muppet on a motor bike who when straight through the intersection. We missed each other by centimeters. This knuckle head then starts hooting and shouting at me.

I was shaking, thankfully some German engineering saved is muppet backside from a lie down. I don't want to be in an accident, especially one that can result in serious injury. It really annoyed me that he broke the rules and was still cross with me. He had not looked. He raced off up the road and away.

People on motor bikes, in general, are not muppets just to be clear.
It is scary how quickly these things can happen.

Please be safe out there! Look carefully and think for everyone!

I was driving to work one dark, rainy morning. I was in the right lane indicating that I was changing lanes. I look in the left side mirror and just see a string of lights. It looks clear so I proceed to change into the left lane.

Suddenly I see a hand in a glove slapping my left window. I soil my undies and then notice the motorcycle. I wind down the window to apologise to the rider who was lane splitting. He's screaming at me about nearly killing him and how blind I am for not looking. By then we've come to a stop.

I point at my mirror and ask him to look and point out the motorcycle among the ocean of headlights shining at me in the dark and rainy gloom.

He looked and rode off.

I had similar on the bike a few weeks ago. Dark, raining and chilly. We stopped at a red light, all was clear so we proceeded to move off from complete stop.

my problem, my glasses had fogged up a little because of the stop. As we moved off the filter arrow on the opposite side of the road turned green, motor bike from that side proceeded to make the turn and was on a path to directly hit me from the right.

I did not see him until we were within 500mm of each other.

100% my fault, but it shows how easy these things happen in challenging conditions.

With Chappies being a bit of bike vs cyclist conflict recently, this one looked rather dishy.

Motor vehicle and non powered wheel mobility working together!

(doesn't try hide the number plate)

jokes aside, he appears to be a commercial pilot, hope he doesn't ignore all the silly and pesky rules at his workplace.

Pure narcissism operationalised

Motorbikes should have an orange headlight. The ones that do are so much more visible.

My luck finally ran out today. First ride on a brand new bike and a car illegally turned across a solid white line gunning for a parking place, to park illegally facing the wrong direction. I had nowhere to go🤬

I ended up low-siding into a parked car, narrowly missing the transgressor. Miraculously I escaped with a graze, but the new bike wasn't as lucky.

The damage appears mostly cosmetic with some deep scratches on the pedals and cranks, grips (easy to replace) are completely torn. I really don't want to claim from my insurance for this, so my question is... what is reasonable to expect the driver to pay for replacement?

I can see him objecting to replacing my R4k pedals because of gnarly deep scratches, but f*$k, my brand new bike looks like s#*t after 20km through no fault of my own.

R15k limit on small claims court (or used to be)

Compile quotes to replace all damaged items, even for spray repair at CBR Durbanville (or similar close to you)

Send a registered letter asking for compensation ... this can go two ways ...

1. If he/she hands it to their insurance you might get a 30 to 50% offer ... their insurance knows you cant take them to court ... take the offer.  (Lesson I learnt the hard way ....)

2. They decide to not get their insurance involved .... either they pay up, or you go the small claims court route.

Best go get a police case number ...

Had a nice zone 2 ride today ... few cyclists out, earlier very few cars.  Closer to mid day the traffic quickly increased ....

The CCT traffic officer crawling forward, over the pedestrian lights, at a red robot ... still GREEN for the other side.  Nope, once the light finally turned green for us he waited, then slowly drove off .... and this was the order of the day ....

Fully branded combi had zero idea anything around it .... idling at 25km/h ... gently swerving between the curb and the white line .... close on a km before we turned in different directions.

Gent sitting at another red robot ... suddenly dropped his phone and bolted into the intersection .... nose dipped as he realised what he was doing ... then just sped off .... just dumb luck another vehicle was not coming from the side at that moment.

Way back when I learnt to ride a motorcycle defensively ... coming in handy now.  The average driver, even that CCT cop, is oblivous of what is happening around their vehicle .... the near misses with other vehicles is alarming.

On our bicycles we are a minor irritation, when they bother to see us ....

DISCLAIMER .... BIG thanks to those drivers who are alert, and who interact with cyclists.  On good days I want to believe most drivers are okay to good .... but some days the idiocy baffles me ...

One of my closest shaves yet today. A GP vehicle on Victoria Road left hand wheels in the yellow lane. Expletives from the darkest corner of the mamilian vocab.

He stopped and waited for me and a Swiss sounding family apologised.

I was gearing up for a social media worthy moment. I gruffly welcomed them to the country and said please watch out for cyclists.

Think they were mortified to have caused me a problem ...

Amazing what adrenaline can do for the 2 minute power.

Also had a very close shave this morning on the way home from our ride.

It was just before dawn, so 1000 lumens shining out front, bright flashing red light out back, keeping far left minding my own business, when this @#$@# in an Audi thought he would try and shave the hairs on my right arm with his left wing mirror.

Same reaction as you, some very choice expletives, plus me waving my hand in front of my front light to make it flash, hoping he would stop so I could educate him boksburg style.
