it was slippy/wet this morning, yet not ENOUGH rain to really 'clean' the roads - wonder if that likely played a role - it really was snotty/slippy...

Im finding it quite stressful lately because I am taking the risk knowing that it really could happen to me.

I don't ride the N1 route or cycle path but as you say any road is risky.  Cars and criminals and the double whammy that's killed some of us.... criminals in cars.

@Mamil Don't allow these f*&^rs to steal your joy, they don't deserve that right. Be vigilant, plan your routes well, take precautions and go out and enjoy your bike. The chances of you being a statistic is still too low to allow it to control you.
**** happens all the time, not just on the bike but in life in general. We just hope and pray it doesn't happen to us and if it does, well then we reset and deal with the consequences. That's human nature.

Yip, rider slipped on the yellow line on the sharp left bend before the overhang on NH side. Broken hip, but otherwise fine.

Hi all. Thinking about riding the 99'r route tomorrow.  Solo. Any sections that are dodgy? Is it a route used often by cyclists? And advice appreciated.

The 96km road route ?

Leave Durbanville, then head straight out to Klipheuwel - skip the Phisantekraal section unless you have a backup vehicle (with a bull bar and the will to use it).  We have cycled past there a few times in the last months, but with a backup-up vehicle ... one of those spots which is fine until the opportunists decide it is time to re-distribute your goods ...

Fine all the way to Malmesbury and back via Old Malmesbury road.

First half of Addelarley road, from Philladelphia side, is in a BAD STATE !!!!  Vehicles needs to zigg zagg to miss massive lumps in the road !!!  It is 3 or 4 very short bits .. just be alerrt of the conditions and traffic in these areas.

THIS may be a serious risk to the fast bunches on race day  !!!  MASSIVE lumps of upstanding tar in the middle of the road .... (as of the first week of January ... lets hope they get repairs done very quickly)

Having skipped the Phisantekraal bit ... turn off on the return leg and go enjoy coffee in Philladelphia.

Cape Town Cycle Tour build-up hit by hijacking scare

https://www.capetownetc.com/news/cape-town-cycle-tour-build-up-hit-by-hijacking-scare/

Fresh safety fears have surfaced for cyclists ahead of the Cape Town Cycle Tour after the Pedal Power Association flagged an alleged attempted hijacking on a well-used Constantia training stretch.

The association said the incident unfolded around 6am on Sunday along Firgrove Road, close to the M3 bridge, where a cyclist riding towards Constantia Uitsig was allegedly targeted by occupants of a white Toyota Venture.

According to the PPA, the vehicle reportedly swerved towards the rider on two occasions in what appeared to be an attempt to force him off the road, prompting the cyclist to take evasive action and escape down a side street before seeking refuge at Constantia Uitsig, as reported by the Cape Argus.

While waiting there, the cyclist later linked up with other riders who claimed they had experienced a similar confrontation on Firgrove Road just minutes earlier.

The organisation also revealed it had been made aware of another incident in Constantia involving a female cyclist, with footage of that encounter circulating on social media.

PPA chief executive Neil Robinson said the association has received multiple reports in recent weeks of cyclists allegedly being targeted along popular training routes, including areas in Constantia, Hout Bay, Spaanschemacht Road and Wellington Road in Durbanville.

Robinson warned that such incidents tend to spike in the build-up to the Cycle Tour, as criminals are aware that cyclists are training in large numbers and often riding alone in the early mornings on high-value bicycles.

He encouraged riders to cycle in groups where possible, consider using a support vehicle during early sessions, wear bright and visible clothing, and ensure their lights are switched on.

The office of Western Cape Premier Alan Winde stressed the importance of reporting these incidents to the South African Police Service so cases can be properly recorded and monitored.

Premier’s spokesperson Regan Thaw said failure to open cases makes it difficult to track patterns of crime, adding that the Premier remains deeply concerned about road safety and condemns all forms of violent crime.

"Good evening!
Yet another heads-up to be careful out there. One of my friends got robbed of his Cannondale gravel bike this morning at 07:30 on the R44 opposite Val de Vine. He is ok, thankfully! It is a grey Lab 71  bicycle. I'll forward a picture of the frame, just in case something pops up somewhere."

That's just outside of Stellenbosch, heading towards Somerset West.

That is very shocking, that road is insanely busy at 7:30 in the morning. Any details of how it played out? I think a few of us use that road often

Agreed – shocking, considering the same happened to me outside Cloetesville in September last year. And, yesterday I actually went out for a ride on the road by myself (first time since I was mugged and bike-jacked), for some CTCT final bike checks. 😠

I was on the opposite side of the road, though, about 2 hours later, oblivious to the above. 😱

And there I was thinking how "safe" it felt heading towards Somerset West from Stellenbosch and how much I missed going out for rides on my own.

From the WA group:

"Blocked him in the yellow line with a knife, so he couldn't swerve out because of traffic."

Today Im part of the statistics, got Bike-jacked on a road I and all of us thought to be safe. Riding down towards Stellenbosch on the DevonValley Road, about 2 km from JC le Roux, a Taxi pushed me off the road, whereafter 3 guys, 2 Africans and a Coloured got out, the Coloured approached me wielding a knife. As much as wanted to resist, I unfortunately didn’t stand a chance. I’m fortunate to only have suffered a small cut on my finger from slapping the knife away.

Thanx for sharing this intel @Reg Lizard

A month or 2 ago we were waxing this particular route as being safe with zero incidents recorded to date. Somebody posted a question on safe routes around Stellies.

Once these poor consumers succeed in their objective, news will travel fast that this is a lucrative route to diversify your "income". This has clearly become another once-popular cycling route to avoid as far as possible. That road to the top, past the golf course, is generally deserted and chances are that you could go about your "business" undetected at any time of day.

Stay safe
