Hey but its your consitutional right to cycle wherever you want and in whatever time slots. And whatever happens the cyclists are right (even if wrong) and are protected by force fields of viruosity that will prevent any harm happening to them.

I must be honest there are a few here I would avoid like the plague at a braai .... in fact I'd rather get dropped by any bunch they may ride in!

And THIS is the worst part of this thread .....

We are supposed to be likeminded lovers of two wheels .... fixed on a trainer, or just a fixy, a rigid with different tyre sizes, heck even all manner of suspension bikes ...

FREEDOM

UNITY

COMMERADERY

But no .... a friend looses his life .... and we go all self destructive ....

I was speaking to @Zebra ... two questions: (turned into a discussion to finally get my point accross .... noting they drive and cycle that stretch at 8 times a week .... qiestions:

1. What can (should) YOUR WIFE do when driving this road to be safe to other traffic and cyclists  (should be a thetorical questiin)

2. What can YOU , @Zebra do to ensure your own wife, delivery vehicle, taxe, bus does not wipe you out, OR rather, to drastically improve your odds ..... at this point these debates gets heated ....

YES .... the cyclists good behaviour has little to zero impact on the bahaviour of the drunk / distracted / speeding / etc driver .... these individuals needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

@ChrisFWRT yoir second question ill tell you what i do.

2 powerful rear lights, one a radar. Front light in flashing mode. 2 strips red reflective tape on heel of shoes because i read that moving light sources predict better visibility.

I hand signal and aggressively take tje lane at pinch points and either slow down or take the lane on left hand corners where cars are likely to cut the apex.

I obey most traffic lights except when it is safe to cross AND i see that I will be safer when doing so.

If radar detects a fast moving vehicle i will routinely make a hand signal which sometimes slows them down.

I am super alert about being dutch doored and ensure i am out of range of doors as much as i can.

I am punctilious about pedestrian right of way.

If I am in a lot of traffic i will work as hard as possible to be at tje same speed as the vehicles.

I realise that in so many of the fatal incidents (accidents is the wrong word, murders might be a bit strong, neglectful homicide might be closer) nonenof the above will matter a jot.

Also, the position that I hold appears to be misrepresented by some to mean an abdication of responsibility for our own safety which is absurd.

Cyclists and motorists are false categories, this is a contextual, legal and socio cultural problem and the terms imposed by these categories restrict thinking about solutions.

That having been said i am increasingly vehement in my dislike for cars and my disdain for what they represent and reveal about our societal attitude to a range of topics, from the environment to our hubristic emphasis on the individual and power. If it was not necessary to own one i wouldnt (we are a one car household, i ride most places i need to be).

Rubber side down every one of us and watch out for @sshats .

Ps edit. In convo with a  someone inntje know and i learned that one of tje retailers built a model siggesting that 700 delivery bike riders were killed on the roads last year. Theres another category, another other ...Let's all start going on about how tjey are to blame.

No amount of grand standing will change the broken culture on our roads

People will drive badly, take risks and die/kill regardless of how other people behave around them.

On average, 1500 motorists (read people in cars) die on our roads every December/Janyuary festive season

12000 to 13500 people die on our roads annually (this includes ALL road users - most deaths belong to pedestrians)

If these numbers aren't enough to change the fundamental motorist attitude, nothing will. Definitely not cyclists obeying the road rules.

Drivers killing drivers doesn't involve othering, motonormativity, hate towards a group or involve a blanket disregard. It just shows how nobody actually cares until it affects them

The answer doesn't lie in blame or behaviour of others, it belongs to everybody who uses the roads and an awareness of how dangerous cars and drivers actually are to those around them.

Looking at the vehicle use structure of our roads would help too

No trucks between 5am and 8pm

Deliveries in or through urban areas to be done in small vehicles. Regulating who can use the roads and when depending on purpose and vehicle size is implemented in countries all over the world.

But not here. Here we just blame each other, grandstand and in the end, do absolutely nothing to stop the rot/death toll

This "you are wrong and we are right" approach is wrong. There is an opportunity to reimagine a different to share public spaces public roads. What should be clear is that the current approach is not working. No one is all right; no one is all wrong.

Agreed!

If you can only see "one side" then it is because you are "blind in one eye".

The SUV in front of the bakkie is also way over the yellow/red line (left edge line) for no reason - BOTH of them could've taken out cyclists or runners.

This is anxiety inducing footage...

That is seriously scary! How would a cyclist riding in the same direction avoid this coming from behind?

Sorry fellows, my earlier message was typed too quickly, before I rushed out, hence the typos. We should all look into the mirror and find our own contribution to the mess, then agree on a different way to sort this out than through endless counter accusations!

You mean one of those rear view mirrors i see some other mamils have on their handlebars. So you can see just how fast the mofo in his Q12 or x19 or whatever is coming up behind?

That really does look like a medical issue - a sudden veering to the left, no effort to correct, no brake light. Doesn't look like he registered the sudden change of direction at all.
