  1. Just one goal for me: Riding more with my family.

FINALLY my boys are at a age where they can ride a reasonable distance without whining about going uphill, heat, being thirsty or that the other one is in front again. They are both scheming where we are going to ride/race next.

My wife is a Zwift queen packing in 4 rides a week and FINALLY I'm getting her to join me on longish weekend rides - OUTSIDE. She is also keen on doing 947 in 2022 so we have a nice training goal (her power-to-weight ratio is starting to scare me a bit and I'm probably going to be chicked on the hills one of these days).

I've been riding actively since 1999 and done 1000's of km's, countless races and multiple stage races - NOW I am looking forward to doing much more of those things with the people most important to me.

  2. We're off to the Vaal Dam for a family weekend in a few weeks time and I thought of riding from home to the Vaal. Dam, that is.

Checking on Google Maps, it's a 130km ride when selecting the "walk/hike" option. Getting out of Jhb will be busy as it starts off on Jan Smuts, but I think it will get better (less busy) when I get to Kliprivier in the souf... Will be doing this on a gravel bike so hoping there are some dirt roads along the way (?)

Anyone have some routes to share/suggestions? Appreciate any feedback and tips!

No, my 2yo has never seen her country and hasn't seen her grandparents since when she was 6 months so we're braving quarantine and all that BS to go over there for a month so that we can catch up a bit with the family.

Worst part is I go to cycling heaven for a month but can't bring my bike with ????

    Rent one?

Throw some shoes, pedals and kit into the hand luggage and just rent a bike. There are plenty of places depending on where you go.

One does not simply go to France and NOT ride a bike.

But seriously, enjoy. I hope it's safe and awesome. Seeing family and putting your toes in your home soil is priceless

I used these guys two years ago while in France and rented a bike for a week. Best... decision... ever...

Very professional and easy to use.

  4. I have done a few payments over R2 000 with Garmin Pay.

I did a R3k one yesterday. The terminal requested a pin for this one. No biggy...

What I found at Checkers on Sunday, was a no-tap policy for transactions over R400.

You could not tap your card or Garmin to complete the transaction.

Obviously nothing to do with Garmin Pay or Bank limitations/restrictions and a policy implemented by the store.

I suspect the limitations around values could be a combination of Garmin Pay "rules", bank specific "rules" and also vendor/shop card machine allowances/limits/rules.

  5. Whether I am selling a whole bike or a stem, why is it that I receive 10-15 messages asking if it is still available and then never hear from them again? Are people bored or dreaming or crazy?

You left out "shot down in flames" as an option on top of bored, dreaming or crazy.

You see: it's probably a case of checking whether an item is available before plucking up the courage and entering into a conversation with the other half, on why you need to spend more money on cycling bits. Many of the 10-15 people asking you the question most likely got the evil eye when asking for permission, and hence not getting back to you... and I'd say a fair amount probably bailed before even getting to the point of asking.

By the way: is it available?

  6. I ride Delta park very regularly as well as other park like Alberts and emmarentia...we try our best to avoid dogs. Im an animal lover and have dogs of my own. I was bitten by a staffie off leash in Alberts and after a verbal confrontation with the owner he admitted that his dog is supposed to be on a leash and paid my doctors bills...city bylaws require dogs to be leashed permanently unless in a dog park...bottom line is they are on the wrong side of the law...plain and simple as that...an animal thats running around freely cannot be controlled and becomes a hazard to other park users..whether cyclists or people just walking....

City by-laws also state that only permitted vehicle in parks are bicycles and that the speed limit is 5km/h.

How many cyclists in parks do you think are on the right side of the law when it comes to this one?
