  1. We were talking about this a minute ago. Since we started lockdown, I have seen 1 single police car - and they were driving in the opposite direction while I came back from the shops. Nothing else, zero cops nor army presence in 30 something days.

Now I understand there are areas that need more manpower; fair, but I still think there needs to be the tiniest visibility across the board.

I made the mistake of running through Parkhurst on my route this morning, and it was like being at Comrades. Yes there were a lot of masks, but certainly not on everyone, nor was there enough distance or enough socialising disincentive.

Just 1 cop standing on a corner would have kept most people in check, and reminded them what they're supposed to be doing (and wearing).

    Was hectic hey?

Coming down Rustenburg road past Victory Park shopping centre and traffic on the Spruit looked like there was a JUMA going on.

  2. I've seen many saddle clamps with the anodising polished off on the sides at the front. Either the saddle is too far back on the rails or the nose is too narrow for the shape of the clamp.

Or, as you say, you need to eat less pies.

never had this issue in 6 years of riding, and I started out at 106kg so weight didnt play a part.

    enjoy the lockdown pies :w00t:

    Hi

Anybody ever experienced their saddle clamp eating their shorts? lost 2 pairs now during lockdown.

Besides the lose weight in your inner thighs comments i am really wanting to hear if its only me and if there is a solution to this?

Perhaps a seatpost with a 1 bolt design?

    Regards

Sorry to read about your shorts, but seriously now: where you guys getting all these pies you talk of?!?!?!?

I'd kill for a Shell Select sausage roll right now.

  3. Looks NICE

Where does this trail start ?  Do we need a day permit, if so, where can we buy it ?

Starts at the Kogelberg nature reserve between Betty's Bay and Kleinmond. Less than a year ago it was free entrance with a wild card because it is part of Cape Nature otherwise only R10 for the day.

Entrance is on the main road between Kleinmond and Betty's - permit is R50 these days.

Easy ride; 11km in and the same 11km out

  4. Wet n wild on the Highveld, one of those weeks where if you're too much of a woos you'll end up not riding at all!86316bea0a67ce14d0a76c3c28f5a9d9.jpg

    Lekker!

Just couldn't stay inside yet again this morning so took my dikwiel out on the tar in the rain.

Only saw two others braving the rain on two wheels as well - some things in common with them: wet, cold and grinning from ear-to-ear.

    Dopamine levels restored.

  5. A good month training and an average month eating . I topped a 1000 km month by riding every day even fridays which was always my day off due to work commitment ..Eating wise was semi ok as we have just bought a Air Fryer and are experimenting with all sorts of meals including making veggie pies ,muffins , roast potatoes ,chips and off course chicken and meat . At least its fat /oil free cooking so that makes a difference to the normal frying pan meals . I now do a 40 km route which includes 5 reasonable cimbs by East Rand standards .( Remember we all belong to the "Flat Earth Society " here ) and gives me 506 m of climbing . I also try and do it mid morning so i really get a sweat up hoping that that assist dropping weight by year end . .

40km with 506m of climbing is not bad at all.

You okay to share details of that loop/route?

I sometimes venture out that way (Boksburg-Benoni area) on longer rides and will be good to get some more climbing in when there.

  6. From a WhatsApp chat group (JMBN Security):

A group of patrollers from Montgomery Park and Roosevelt Park have taken it upon themselves to patrol the perimeters and neighbouring streets to the Emmarentia dam, where the robbery incidents occurred. The patrol was from 05:00 to 06:00 this morning. There were 4 vehicles with lights. A few cycling, a few runners and some walking. In total there was 15 to 20 patrollers. If anyone from Emmarentia or Greenside is interested in joining, you welcome to meet us at the Greenside mosque at 04:45 every morning.

So just an update. We did come across a few unsavory characters. One of whom we are quite sure was up to no good. This gentlemen entered the Vlei on John Makenzie at around 5am and exited only around 5:30. Appeared to be a runner at first. Was very aggressive when he came across the patrollers. Hopefully they get the message.

  8. heads up - Brother and Friend got hit this morning as well.

Watch and Cell phone taken.  Will post details once i have the full story.

This is surely the work of a repeat offender now.  the same person/group. three incidents in 6 days.  Quick sell pawn items like watch and cellphone

    Ag no man.

Can you get and share some more details on the MO and what the perp looks like? Gun / knife? More than one?

It looks like the hits are happening early morning - between 6 and 7, so perhaps when there is less traffic (?)

I avoided Emmarentia on yesterday's ride (quite pissed that I felt I had to do that) and went for a loop round Northcliff koppie and back to Parktown North. I joined the trail again at Tana road crossing and there were loads of cyclists around - few solo riders and a big group of ladies as well (was round 9h00).

I tweeted Michael Sun & Jozitrails on Sunday and now see now Jozitrails are "escalating" following this mornings incident. Hopefully we'll see some more patrolling now - especially early mornings - and the perp(s) is caught asap.

  9. I used to park at either the Old Rose Pub, the Riverside shopping Centre or the car park opposite Fratellis - depending on who (if anyone) I was riding with, and where they wanted to meet.

In any case we'd generally head south first - and ride down as far as the bottom of Melville - then ride across the koppies to Ablerts Farm and then diagonally back across to the Botanical Gardens and continue north back up the Spruit - often going as far as Paulshof under the N1 freeway.

After the ride we'd stop for a beer and/or a Pizza before a short drive home.

To have a strip of recreational parkland - suitable for Walkers, Joggers and Bikers, adults and kiddies, that runs pretty much the entire length of the northern suburbs of Johannesburg - is an absolute gem worth treasuring.

The scum that are stealing from members of the public who are using this area are stealing more than just your possessions. They are stealing your right to a way of life. Your right to use an enjoy a local municipal service that is part and parcel of where you live and what your taxes pay for.

I hope that, one way or another, the problem can be stamped out and the public can use and enjoy this network of paths and trails the way I used to.

    Good luck.

    Bonus.

I've been riding the Spruit on and off circa 1999 - at first just botanical gardens area while still at RAU; expanded more when sharing a flat living in Linden and more recently at least once a week in the last 8 years while living in the Parks - most of these rides I do alone and haven't had any close calls or felt threatened (very lucky I guess). Even commuting to Midrand, that with a partner though, from 2015 to Midrand once a week in warmer months.

Been a few bouts of muggings throughout the years and really sad to see this recent "spree" popping up again. All the work Jozitrails are putting in really making it a popular outing for anyone wanting some R&R right on your doorstep.

Sincerely hope this one is quickly nipped in the bud.

  10. Hey guys, quick question for a noob, I've picked up my race number and racetec chip, first time I'm doing a race so only got one now. The chip comes with a plastic adapter thing to put behind the bolt of the wheel quick release and they say you HAVE to use that or buy an ankle strap, problem is my bike doesn't have a bolt like that so can't really put it there the way they want so can I just cable tie it to my fork or something?

    jip.

or you can fix it to your shoe (velcro strap)
