It is a strange and tragic feeling for me, every time I see something related to the explosion I get that same hollow feeling I had when seeing the two aircraft striking the Twin Towers.

It is fascinating to watch something so awesome, but at the same time also terribly sad because it means instant death or lifelong scars for many innocent people. Conflicting emotions. Edit: The difference between awesome and awful isn't as wide as it should be.

Ā

That explosion is a graphical portrayal of what Covid is doing. A burn and smoke leading to diffuculty breathing, and then boom, someone dies and leaves a trail of destruction in its wake. Tragic.

It was a lot of ammonium nitrate that had been there a long time, the question is what set it off? Its pretty stable on its own, using it as a commercial explosive requires addition of diesel and a detonator. Otherwise its just fertilizer without a starter/accelerant.

Ā

It can explode all on its own at a temperature of 210C. In this case it seems that a welder managed to ignite fireworks stored adjacent to the AN stockpile. That would do it.

Ā

Also the commentary on the explosion is that it was only a partial detonation..

PARTIAL ... would hate to know how bad it would have been should the whole lot have gone boom.

Ā

I would assume that with the explosion the warehouse would be blown to bits and hence no longer being able to contain all the Nitrate long enough to be ignited fully .. or something like that

Ahh, so that was the detonator.Ā  It would be impossible to get the whole amount to go up from one detonation point I imagine, hence the partial explosion, but stillĀ
