Any feedback available on the Bialetti moka express pots? Are they worth it? What is the coffee like?

Absolutely worth it if you like stronger coffee. They do not make espresso in the true sense, but you can make perfectly satisfying coffee that can approach espresso, in my amateur view at least.

They are convenient, and the process and output can be addictive  ;), millions of Italians cant be wrong!

The first thing to understand is the capacity - a 6 cup Bialetti makes an average mug, and so on. I would also say avoid the cheap imitations, go for Bialetti - spares are available in ZA.

There is tons of info on the web, forums, websites and You Tube, so do some research.

Hi, I'm interested in this Jack Espresso Leveler. I know there are similar tools available e.g on CCB but I'm interested in this one particularly. Anyone importing?

I have read that these are just gimmicks - of more importance is breaking up any clumps, which is achieved through a thick needle or skewer

Have a look at an Aeropress as well. I have both and I use my Aeropress a lot more than the Moka. Every now and again I pull the Moka out and brew a mug but that just reminds me why I use the Aeropress. I use an Able standard stainless steel filter instead of the paper filters. It brews a nice flavourful full bodied cup of coffee.

Aeropress is definitely an alternative to the Moka. Something special about preparing a Moka pot coffee, but for consistency, ease of use and convenience when travelling the Aeropress is a winner.

I take the Moka when camping and on gas, but otherwise the Aeropress and Hario grinder has become my travelling companion when on contract.

Porqui uses his Aeropress for everyday coffee at home, even when he has the availability of my Gaggia Espresso machine he still goes with the Aeropress.

Its a tough call for me between my aeropress and my Clever Dripper..

The clever dripper will make two decent Americanos on a single brew!

Aeropress for travel with an able disk is a winner

I have the exact same experience.

I now only use the mokka pot when making coffee for more than two people at once.

(And only when the coffee machine is off, ie camping, load shedding.)

I like the ritual of using the mokka pot, and the nostalgia is high (my wife introduced me to mokka coffee when we started dating) but the aeropress makes lekker coffee, and the travel setup with my porlex mini works lekker.

The Clever dripper does make a nice cup, just all those paper filters start adding up if you buy them at Pnp.

The cotton-based filter works well - they come three in a pack (got mine from Truth (online order).

I also got some cotton filters from Truth when I ordered my dripper from them, added a weird flavour to the coffee, to the degree that I stopped using my Clever dripper all together. Can you recall what make yours are?

Then I randomly decided to try paper filters, mmm finally nice coffee.

Exactly the ones I got.

I'd suggest trying with paper filters when you get a chance, available at most supermarkets, just make sure to get the correct size I think it's one below the very largest. You may be surprised at the taste difference.

I agree, I have a few Bialetti's and while I love them they are just not as convenient as an Aeropress. They produce a different flavour too and I slightly prefer that of the Aeropress.

I love the ritual of the mocha pot, its one of my favourite ways to make coffee, it can also be a bit of a pain though when you are making for a few people when away on holiday though.

Just to clarify.... when you use the Moka pot, do you keep full heat right up until the brew stops coming out the spout? What sort of extraction time are you aiming for?

I normally boil water in the kettle beforehand and then lower the heat a little when it starts to come out.
