I can't put the body under stress, so I've managed a few slow, easy 5km trail runs with the dog. Been a rough year, but things are healing and coming on nicely. I still have some quite serious vision issues in my left eye where the swelling of the brain pushed against the optic nerve, but it's getting better slowly. Hoping to be back running freely and fit by this time next year! Jeepers dude, that is seriously hectic... terrible bloody thing meningitis, had a friend lose a child to it overnight. Glad you made it and are on the mend - a lesser person may well not have. I'm sure I join everyone on here in wishing you a full recovery - always enjoyed your crazy antics and views. Prince Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Hi Guys After many years of not running i am back to running 5km/10km sort of distances, Parkrun sort of thing. I am looking for some suggestion for new shoes, not expensive as i will never run marathons etc again. I am a mild over pronator. Used to run in Asics gel DS trainers

Thank you Andrew Yeah, it was definitely a shock. Having limited brain function afterwards was the biggest scare. Things like making tea were more often than not too challenging to get right. But I'm back mostly fully functional and getting over the last of the physical issues. I will be slowly strapping on the running shoes and hopping on the bike once or twice a week and getting my head around expectations. I've taken up golf as I can walk without hassle, so I'm quite enjoying that challenge. Really looking forward to being able to run 2 or 3 times a week without ill effect and seeing how the brain and body feel. Slowly slowly. Being alive and having time to spend with my son these last few months has been absolute gold. It's amazing how quickly things can change and we have to embrace the outcome and make the most of what we have. Andrew Steer, SwissVan, Scary Rider and 1 other 4

I'm trying HOKA Arahi 6 at the moment, also a stability shoe for pronation, so far so good. They are softer and more comfy than the GT1000/2000 but not sure how durable and long they will last. amac 1

I found the Arahi’s a bit hard / stiff compared to other Hoka’s Also a pronater and quite happy with the GT2000, but then I’m only jogging a few km per week, not like some of the mega km crazies here…. Frosty Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 Anyone interested in a story behind Breaking 2 and Project 1:59, should listen to this podcast. Skip to 34:00 to miss the cycling-related discussion. Some background info: Dr Kevin Sprous, Team Doctor with EF, and Robby Ketchell worked together on the team, before Ketchell moved to Sky, then worked on the two attempts to break he 2 hour marathon. Interesting discussion on his involvement in both attempts from when and where, to drafting and more. https://podcasts.apple.com/za/podcast/the-podium/id1516026786?i=1000598222463 Lexx, PhilipV and ScottCM 3

Thanks for remembering. 50km of single track through giant redwoods and alongside crystal clear rivers followed by the awe-inspiring sulfur flats. I had a target time of sub 8 hours and came in under 7h30 minutes. Ran with my wife so we set pretty achievable goals as it was our first ultra. Basically just took our time, enjoyed each moment, and stuffed our faces at the well-stocked aid stations. 1500 meters of elevation (although Strava smoothing reduced that to 1,100) and a course of 52km. The atmosphere is amazing. It's NZ's biggest trail race by qty of runners. Over 5,000 participants across the 4 distances. 21km, 50km 100km, and miler. Around 2,000 people for the 21 and another 2,000 for the 50. The balance spread over the 102 and miler. Got to see some trail legends run past me. Zach Miller, Lucy Bartholomew, Hayden Hawkes, Truly epic stuff. In fact, Zach stayed at my previous coach's house so we had a good time with him. He ended up winning the miler. All in, the bug has bitten hard and I am keen to either run it again next year and go harder or up to the 102! Here are a few photos of the course (prepare for photospam - all official photos I have paid for from sportograf)... tjommies3, PhilipV, Scary Rider and 6 others 9
