Hi

I purchased a pair of Look Keo 2 Max pedals in March 2018.

Recently I would sometimes hear a squeaking sound from the right pedal when riding.

I thought it was the cleats that were making the sound and was planning on replacing them. Yesterday, after my ride (1 Jan 2019) I decided to lube the chain of my bike.

While pedalling the crank backwards by hand , the pedal fell off its axle !

I have contacted the dealer and handed the pedals over.

They have informed me that they will have to wait for the local distributor to reopen after their holiday to make a decision on the pedal.

The dealer has offered to apply "Loctite" to the pedal to ensure that it does work itself loose again.

I refused to accept their fix due the inherent danger of that pedal coming off again while riding.

I have never loosened or tinkered with the pedals that were installed by the bike shop.

No crash damage either.

Any thoughts advice on this issue ?

Hi Vishal,

I recently had the same issue, what was the outcome did you manage to get it sorted?

I had an issue with a look pedal a while ago and the guy that imports the pedals was a member here on bikehub. I can't remember his profile name but I still have his phone number. I was able to sort my issue myself but he was very helpful and communicated with me via whatsapp. PM me if you want his number.

if the axle nut wasn't loctite in place to begin with then its a simple fix to apply it.

secondly that nut is about 8mm long with a 1mm thread pitch so It would have taken 8 rotations of teh crank to come off the axle.

If the pedal body isn't cracked or the threads stripped then the loctite option is a sound fix

I have been in contact with LOOK USA during the past month regarding the very same failure, though my pedal body came off the axle when I unclipped from the pedal upon arriving at my house. Here is contact information of a LOOK representative: kknowles@lookcycle.fr

I will send Ken (his name) a link to this thread after posting in case he wants to address the issue. Know that LOOK recalled various pedals for spindle failures back in 2008: https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2008/cycle-pedals-recalled-by-look-cycle-pedals-can-break-causing-cyclists-to-fall

LOOK concealed the recall from me, then after I found it on my own (using Google) and confronted LOOK with it, the representative (Dennis) claimed it was "from 2002" which is obviously false. LOOK did not seek to learn about the incident I reported. LOOK claimed my KEO 2 MAX pedals are "old" and said by email: "These are older pedals, versions we stopped manufacturing over 20 years ago. " This is obviously false, because we know LOOK KEO 2 MAX pedals came out around 10 years ago. The LOOK representative who made this statement never even saw a photo of my pedals before making this statement. No incident report, no documentation of the issue, just arrogance and dishonesty - emphasis on arrogance.  Defensive, argumentative.

The good news is I purchased Shimano Ultegra 8000 pedals for 120USD shipped with cleats from LordGun (online retailer) and they work BEAUTIFULLY. I highly recommend retiring your LOOK pedals and moving over to Shimano or some other brand. The Shimano Ultegra interface (between axle and pedal body) is extremely solid metal to metal, whereas the poor quality LOOK pedal is composite and weakly connects the body/spindle.

Don't buy into LOOK's claim that the pedal requires 'maintenance' from a "professional mechanic." The KEO 2 MAX user manual says that maintenance is 'cleaning dirt' and 'cleaning' the pedal. It doesn't mention any maintenance procedures whatsoever.

Ken advised me to take the pedals to an LBS "so they can be disposed of properly" whereas another LOOK representative told me" Please, please allow a professional mechanic to inspect your pedals." The rep (who has never revealed his/her name) that made the latter statement is the same one who claimed the pedals are "older pedals" from "over 20 years ago."

I like that your pedals are 2018, not that any pedal body should ever unexpectedly come off its spindle. This is remarkably dangerous and we should both kiss the ground and be glad we are alive. You will thank me 100x over after you try Shimano SPD-SL pedals. I have some Dura Ace 9000 and 9001 on the way as well. Cheers from Los Angeles.

You may wish to submit a report here in order to make other cyclists aware of the defect: www.saferproducts.gov

It may also help to obtain a replacement set from LOOK.  I attached here a lawsuit that was filed against LOOK which describes a serious failure of LOOK KEO 2 MAX pedals: "Suddenly, the spindle on the right LOOK KEO 2 Max carbon pedal broke on a downward stroke."

nice segway 👍

I used Look Quartz pedals previously and now Look S-Track on my MTB.  Although I like the S-Tracks more, I had zero issues with either of them.

It must be a KEO specific thing then.  Solution, get a MTB ....  😁

Why the heck are you quoting me ?

BTW #1, Look is one of the biggest selling pedal brands I'm pretty sure that if they had a life thtreatening problem they would have withdrawn the product from the US market.

#2, Everyone gets sued in the USA
