Not a lot, but just enough to make a big diff in feel.

More changes per press on the downshift (1 on deore vs 3? on XT)

Metal thumb lever

Smoother actuation (bearings vs bushings)

It results in a slightly crisper & smoother feeling.

Eldron's shifter rule - whatever group you buy - buy the shifter from one groupset higher.

One of the joys of Shimano's new 12spd mtb stuff is the almost complete interchangeability.

The smart choice is the buy the permanent stuff like crank, shifter, brakes etc from the best group you can afford then do consumables like chain/cassette from the group you can afford sustainably.

I will remember this!

if you look at whats available online, GX eagle is generally around the same price as XT and more expensive than SLX.

I am assuming the prices we see now online are based on the existing stock and at the prices these shops paid when the ZAR was stronger (before lock down)

Assuming the prices you have stated above are correct and we do see massive price hikes due to the exchange rate, you can expect price increases across all brands of groupsets to follow suit.

However if these stores are buying in bulk perhaps they getting it at a much cheaper price than the prices you quoting.

(Cant say for sure, dont have the inside info)

I think if things become too expensive and people may look towards alternative non mainstream groupsets in future......

My opinion, nothing wrong with the good old 2x or 1x 11 or 10 speed groupset.

my primary ride will now be a 1 x 1 for the fore-sable future in order to preserve the drive train on the 1 x 11 bike!

True

I am always amused that Manufactures sell bikes with a lower spec shifter and brakes and higher tier derailleur

I like to buy brakes and cranks from specialist component companies like Hope. I find it helps to future proof the looks of the gruppo a bit - especially cranks chande appearance a lot, and I ride my stuff for long if it works well.

I drooled over the Hope crankset for a long time, then found one cheap cheap on a cwc sale, seems they had one that nobody wanted to buy.

Bit of a pain to install and remove but otherwise it is fantastic.

One good thing RE an internal gearbox is that it would only be the cost of a single speed chain, the odd cog after many thousands of km's and oil once a year in the box to keep the bike rocking and rolling .... so should be ridiculously cheaper in the long run.

Which is probably why it never got support from the manufacturers ....

Why sell something that dont need replacement parts ....

Wont be the first time that good ideas are delayed by big business ...

Excellent advice!

Shimano already has a gearbox, it's mostly a touring/commuting groupset.

The market isn't willing to accept the weight and drag. The drag is getting less, but gearboxes are still pretty heavy. Oh and the fact that it does not fit on almost all frames.

you know how it goes ... keep the same gearbox, just change the mounting points for a new standard, and use a new "carbon upgrade" cover plate and one is then forced to upgrade to a new bike

if you say so lol...

also..you dont NEEED microspline ;-)

https://www.evobikes.co.za/components/groupsets/shimano-xtr-12-speed-upgrade-kit-with-sunrace-cassette.html

point is...it will come in cheaper than full SLX by probably the relative percentage difference between XT and SLX...that will already make it way cheaper than GX since SLX already is. But then again...SRAM will probably be forvced to drop the prices on those now.

and only the top of the line microspline freebodies go for ~2k, more like 1.5k if you know where to shop...like the hope ones etc. other options for generic hubs like novatech etc are also cheaper:

and at the top end

also...as mentioned....0% duties on spares.

FYI - confirmation the Lyne one works on the Stans hubs

Anyone have any idea when this will be available in sa? My 10 speed deore chain and cassette are due for replacement and I managed to destroy my rear derailleur this morning. Seems like the perfect time to move to 12spd.
