Are cyclist just too superior to keep their masks/buffs on

The mask issue aside.

It always amazes me how hard Sanparks seems to try to be unpopular with the people they are supposed to serve.

Believe me we as cyclists are not popular with our municipal parks officials here in Pretoria either. As one official told me "Why should I worry about cyclist you are the most self centered group out of all our communities, you guys never do anything in the park except complain." They're constantly looking for a reason to exclude us from their parks, I can't say it's has been an easy task to represent our cause.

I definitely hear you. I used to be mildly involved in trail politics and it's just a massive pain in the jack.

I really don't get the rant over people not wearing face masks. Why should this be surprising to anyone? Folks in SA have long ago given a stuff about abiding by the law. They drive while under the influence of alcohol, they text and whattwitfacestagram, they don't stop at stop streets. They drive up one-way roads from the wrong side. They don't pay their TV licenses. They speed...you get the point.

Now that one more thing has popped up trying to kill humanity, all the world gets their titties in a knot about who is and who is not wearing a mask.

I say we are adulting here, so let the responsible one's wear a mask, for their own protection. For the rest, let the strongest survive. A small little bug named after a beer or a crown, depending who you ask, will deal with the weakest.

When I'm out in a public space, I wear a mask or my buff, regardless if I'm not in immediate surrounds of people or not (unless I am absolutely singularly alone, on some single track somewhere). Anyone not wearing a mask just gets ignored. I have better things to expend my energy on.

Masks aren't so much to protect yourself but to protect others from you unwittingly spreading the virus. Not wearing one in proximity to others basically says I don't care about you or anyone you might come into contact with.

The current rules that you cover your face at all times in public might be over the top - it certainly seems so pedaling along hundreds of metres from the next person, but to pull your buff or mask up when near to others is not unreasonable.

Similar to the cycling in groups.  It is against the temporary laws, which may be a bit strict. Joining with people from maybe one other household, maintaining distance and face covering seems OK to me.  Large groups from multiple homes, which we have all seen many of, with no distancing and masks is just brainless.  Also arrogant, entitled, and selfish, which is not a great combination but seems quite common and is one of the reasons this country has been down rabbit holes in the past.

hahahaha so many whataboutisms...

If you fall or get jacked or have an accident without a mask on, people might be less obliging to assist. I dunno.... Let's rrather leave this alone and say that if you choose not to wear a mask and don't social distance from me and my family, I will feel as though you're a bit of a selfish git. Like on a narrow walkway etc...

I am however able to not care if you are on the road/mountain as I can choose to let you past and social distance myself from you pretty easily. I can also choose to stop in different places to you.

I can pretty much control my own 1m in most situations outdoors, so getting angry just isn't worth it.

I thought I'd relate this event yesterday:

My 7 year old son and I went for a ride yesterday to christen his new bike.

We headed off to lower Tokai. It's his favourite place to ride, and we had great fun surfing the tree stumps.

As we were heading back to the car, he dropped behind a little.

As I passed a group of adults and teenagers gathered at the side of the path I heard him go down.

He fell quite hard and trapped his knee under the frame and started to howl.

Now, none of the group I'd just past had masks on, and my son had fallen directly across from them.

Two of the younger adults jumped up to respond and assist. Human nature took over and they dashed to his aid, oblivious to the fact that they had no masks on, just wanting to help.

They reached him before I did, and despite my shouting to leave him alone they were too focussed to stop. One lifted the bike off him, the other helped him up. I was then close enough to ask them to please leave him alone.

On the one hand, it was heart warming to see the human instinct to help, on the other - get away from my little boy if you don't have a mask on.

What it does bring home is that all of these 'scenarios' which people are playing out in their heads as to why ............... (insert whatever rule/law/advice) doesn't necessarily apply to them, arrogantly assumes that they can control every situation they find themselves in.

I had a different but similar scenario with built in human nature.

I was in a Spar on the weekend getting groceries and a guy misjudged a turn and lost a few items out of his trolley right next to me.

I instinctively bent down to help him pick up the items he dropped only to be yelled at not to touch anything.

I get that people are being cautious, we do so to protect those we love. Its just a little hard to accept how callous people are due to the fears.

If only this was said in the beginning. Would've saved 38 pages of nonsense.

I wonder of all those who posted on this thread what % do wear masks and what % do not wear masks.(While cycling)

Apparently according to FB no cyclists wear masks so that means that very few of you are out riding.
