I absolutely LOVE this event.  And sure as hell, it will sell out in seconds........but...........

For the CT guys it might be a jol and something to do while there is nothing else on the calendar.

But it just feel as if PPA is taking a bit advantage of this Covid crap......

But that is me.

Guess I will have to skip this one this year.  To rich for my poor ass.

Those of you that will ride it...........have fun!!!!

R 1200 per rider .... to ride a road which is always available to riders ....

Even for the Capies .... 400km return trip .... and mostly people make a weekend of it, adding lots more costs ...

The main benefit being that "weekend vibe" .... but even the "vibe" is no longer part of the event ....

Turning into a LOAD of money to ride 200km .... which the Capies can do from their front door at no more than the cost of a mid ride coffee ....

There is no headline sponsor this year, don't under-estimate how much a sponsor contribute to keeping entry fees affordable & the "free stuff" in your goodie bags

I seriously doubt that PPA is pocketing big time on this event. Don't be surprised if this event is discontinued if they can't find a sponsor before next year.

PPA reckons they can keep it going for a few years at the 2019 entry fee.

The challenge in 2020 is the reduced field to make the event work. They're distributing their costs over a smaller field so it's going to cost more.

DoH requirements in terms of health protocols has also added cost. that again has to be covered by fewer riders.

The way I see it is yes it's a higher cost to keep the event going. If it falls away this year then its becomes harder to get the approvals next year (that's just how governments work).

This year 1500 riders are paying to cover the costs 4000 riders have covered in previous years.

You obviously have not done a coffee ride in Cape Town in a while, 3 coffee stops with croissants easily comes to R1200!

It also a great charity event, not only for the PPA that allows to utilise their staff more but also is a massive boost to the local Swellendam economy. Having all the eateries and shops full for a weekend before the busy season must be great.

I have ridden parts of the route when its open, especially the passes and its not as lekker than on race day with the first pass closed and a heightened awareness of cyclists on the road.

YES, you are correct.  The spin-offs from these events are huge the district.

Even adding in the "weekend costs" it compares well with many other weekend events, so I am not saying it is over prized.

I am just grumpy and suffering cabin fever .... for me an "event" is about the "weekend", the "vibe", the comeradery, the stories around the fire .....  To rock up, ride, go home ... nhaaaa, that aint no "event".

I know it is as good as it gets for now.  And a BIG thanks to PPA for putting it together.

But I really need to feel that "vibe" again .....

Sounds like you need to find a team that can plan properly....

But a road race with "twist" ...

The feeding zones was so much more than just a rest and feeding zone for the riders.

You had to walk the length of it in Ashton to appreciate the vibe amongst the families and supporters.

Dont get me wrong, I understand why it is different this year.

I even understand why hardcore racers may prefer the new format.

But speaking to some of the slower teams last year, seeing their leave no rider behind approach, and how the enjoyed it as a very special fun ride .... how some supporters dressed up and created a carnival atmosphere ....

Glad for the Savages and their competitors ... but equally sorry for the fun riders and their supporters.

The DC may well be one of a few events that catered to both the racers and fun riders ....

O well .... hoping we can support again in 2021 ....
