Example: My kids need to see me stopping at a stop street, so one day they will it's the right thing to do. My one daughter said that our neighbour doesn't stop at this particular stop street (on their way to school) and just drives straight through. Bad habits are hard to stop without a conscious effort.

People love to criticise others when the consequences of their law-breaking are fatal, but justify breaking it themselves when they judge it to be "harmless".

My 2cents for what it's worth. I stopped drink 5 years ago when I got married. It is remarkable how awkward braai's become when you are the only guy drinking a coke. Luckily Alcohol free beer came out and made social events less of a mission.

This country has a nationwide alcohol problem, once you start brewing up pineapples to get your fix, you should ask some questions.... This isn't normal, if you can't go for a month or two without a "drink", you might have a problem.

I too, have challenged my friends and family to provide me with some data about the possible health benefits of alcohol. Nothing notable thus far, except the perception of it being a "social lubricant" or "dutch courage".

Whilst on the rant about traffic violations, speeding... Here in Paarl it's quite an issue, especially past Spice Route (Suider Paarl Road), the speed limit is 80km/h yet people drive 120km/k+ there. It's part of many of the road cycling loops and even leads to many of the MTB trails, so simply avoiding it isn't that easy.

*Rant over*. Have a great day folks and stay safe.

After living in KZN my whole life, I have found living in Paarl very relaxing.

I've never even considered owning a road bike until I moved here. For sure, there are places that people speed, but for the most part, drivers here are some of the best I've encountered.

Or just quit drinking and you never have to ever worry about it..... 🙊

i usually feel that people who say things like this have a problem controlling themselves, but i know your story so I'll leave it there.

I've never had that issue. I've never been "drunk out of my mind", or drink just for the sake of drinking. I've always been the responsible one telling friends to stop and that they've had enough. As the adverts all say "know when to stop" - i've always known when i'm about to have enough.

We grew up with wine in the house, it was never this THING to us...and we were allowed to have some with food from a relatively young age. We never had to steal booze from the cabinet when the parents were out. it wasnt necesary. It wasnt placed on this pedestal that some people do.  Responsible parenting i call it.

on the other hand, I knew people who were withheld and only 'discovered' alcohol in university and they went from the top performing students in the country at that time to fat and pregnant washouts real quick because they were never taught to have responsible relationships with all the vices the world has to offer. There are plenty. not just booze. You cant shield your kids from it, you can teach them to be responsible though. It is not going away.

As with all things in life...it's about balance imo. If you cant figure that out, you probably struggle with similar crap in other parts of your life too. Porn? drugs? cigs? There are people who are just genetically predisposed with addiction I guess.

anyway, i dont drink...I ENJOY a glass of wine or a cold beer with my food once every now and then. I stopped drinking for 2 years when my wife was pregnant - to support the fact that she didn't for obvious reasons. It was a non event really.

it has become what they always do... Drivers vs cyclist, teetotalism vs alcohol abuse, moral high ground vs hypocrisy lol

I firmly believe this is why I never felt the need to binge on alcohol. It was there, you wanted it you took it, just let the parent know you took it so they dont blame the help.

I was drinking sips of beer with my dad on a sunday whilst we watched the F1 since I was 10 years old, when I was old enough I'd have a full one.
