Noticed that during the Montecasino classic race a "Litter Zone" sign had been put up on Sterkfontein Caves Road about 200m from the corner to the R563. Direction was going towards the R540.

Appears that the "Litter zone" sign was put up by race organisers for the Montecasino Classic.

Today riding past the area it is full of trash - litter from the race - 100s of gel wrappers and random junk from the riders.

The "Litter zone" sign was gone...

  1. Was this litter zone created by race organisers? who was responsible for it?
  2. Why create a litter zone - when the zone will not be cleaned up afterwards?

Support for the race has to be questioned now - as the environment was left in a worse off state due to this race. Poor show.

You love a good rant, don't you? So quick to jump to conclusions and drag a business name through the mud

Did you try to contact the race organizers to bring this to their attention? Or was it straight to social media for you?

It was the Cradle Cracker yesterday so could of in all probability been as a result of the runners.

Nope. this is 100% from the Monte Race.

i think regardless of if OP contacted the organisers - this deserves to be in the spotlight just for how little care the organisers have.

if anything its worth pointing the organisers over to these threads via twitter, facebook, instagram etc to ensure they actually do something about it

Agree with you 100%. I noticed the gel wrappers still there yesterday. I DM'd the organizers yesterday and will notify the Cradle Management people who supposedly provide permission to the organizers.

Interestingly enough, the runners yesterday were amazing. No water bags used and I couldn't see any litter - in stark contrast to last year's CC

@Ace Cycles, there is no doubt where the wrappers came from. I rode through that zone during the race on my normal weekend ride and stopped there as many riders do and saw the feed zone and **** being put down.

Cradle Cracker didn't pass that spot. Wrappers are old and flattened by traffic and restricted to what was the feed zone.

Why would one first have to contact the organisers before going to social media.

The organisers arranged the event, made a profit off the event and created a "litter zone".
The organisers are responsible for the event, and the state of that they would leave surrounding area they held the event it.

Go straight to social media and shame them, next time they will go over the site before leaving to make sure all is in good order.

Personally, I can't see that Lenie was aware that the litter zone was left in that state. It's a big event and a lot goes into planning and organization, so it's very easy to miss something.

We all want more races, but publicly shaming race organisers is not constructive. We should support them as we want to same things. Bigger, better, safer events

Do we as riders really need a "litter zone".... put it back where you got it from, your back pocket.

Was wondering how much the snowflakes are carrying for a 3-4 hour max effort surely that they need a 'litter zone' to get rid of the 'wrappers'?

I tell you what Ace, why not meet me there on the weekend and help me pick it all up.

That way you can support your local organiser before he gets bashed further and be constructive.

If you're keen I'll bring the black bags. Yes?

Love your attitude bud

Honestly, litter zone or not. You have to be real special to think throwing a wrapper onto the side of the road in a world heritage site is a viable option. It can go into your pocket till you find a bin, not rocket science. Nothing to do with the organisers, just the actual human beings on the bicycles. How much of an inconvenience is carrying a 5gram wrapper to the bin at the water point or finish line?
