Experienced that last weekend !!!!

Was 11 degree when I left home and through Brakkies .... 4 degrees by the time I got to Hazendal, and stayed 4 degrees for the length of Bottelary.

Being nice and warm at home I left the gloves on the table .... :cursing:

Got some anti-freeze (coffee) at Potbelly.  As soon as I left Potbelly and turned towards Franschhoek the temperature jumped to 15 degree.

I wore normal kit this morning at contermankloof before 9am, post covid pace so at 130bpm, have to admit I misjudged the temps. MTB normally warms you up a lot more/quicker than the road bike because of the lower cruising speed, but at that pace I didn’t sweat at all and it was cold in the shade !

The result of the Dirty Jutland gravel race in northern Denmark. Awesome place with amazing scenery and an awesome course. The down side....it was a point to point race and the prevailing wind was in our faces... First time I have ever experiences a 9 hour headwind! Brutal but rewarding.

Nice little after work ride .... Gifbergpass

EDIT - Some photos taken by the GoPro.

The climb starts like any other gravel pass, and all too soon the views to the side gets nicer and nicer ....

Gifberg-13.jpg.a9bd906a54944beaefaffe42f4319167.jpg

Gifbergpass has two steep sections that have been tarred.  Nice respite from the gravel, but seriously steep.

It would not be a gravel road if it did not have the odd section in need of attention.  Sure, the pass has its fair share of corrugations, but very few bad spots.

The section tar section .... even steeper than the first .... the horizontal lines in the rock face gives some idea of just how steep this section is.  During the climb I did not give a second thought to all the loose gravel along the sides ....

Took 60 minutes to the top.  After a short stop it was time to get down and back to the farm before darkness sets in ....

OUCH !!!  Where to ride ??  WAY too much loose stuff on the edges .... thankfully there was no traffic and I could hogg the middle of the road ....  I could feel the brakes glazing and loosing grip   I really had to grab those brakes to slow down !!!  Some proper corrugations and turns just after it goes onto gravel .....

Gifberg-27.jpg.913c1084d7a6d7c6dc843182f7feeab6.jpg

Once my swinkter let go off the saddle I got to enjoy the view ....

Gifberg-28.jpg.8a24a3b5e00f9fbf35f716db4192974c.jpg

The views just kept on getting better in the fast setting sun.

Got back home in those precious moments between sunset and darkness .....

No pics. Did my normal Airport Loop in reverse.

Left home with clear blue skies, wind started to pick up 12km in, by the time I rounded the airport and was headed home into the headwind I could see the mist rolling in from the South East, 2km later visibility was down to about 100m (20m if I left my fogged up glasses on).

Still better than lying in bed.

love it. The Cederberg area is amazing. We'll be doing our bi-annual 'We Don't Do Races, Just Ride Our Bikes', expedition from Travellers Rest to Papkuilsfontein at the end of May - via the path less travelled

Spoke to the farmer at breakfast this morning.

Going up the pass, as I did yesterday, you then turn left at the top.  The road goes over the plato, then drops down the "Old pass", and links back to the gravel road and back to their farm.  Apparently about 65km.

This is on my bucket list for the next time I am in the area 👍

Shortly after these photos the mist, that @ouzo mentioned in his post, rolled in.

Good to see you this morning mate 😎
