20 Years of Bike Hub

News bot

Recommended Posts

I been here 16 years so joined sometime back in 2008 as #9436

Those were the wild days when you could say what you wanted with some serious online fights happening.

I still remember the oom with the tandem used to be a padmaker up in Angola or the DRC somewhere - Can't remember his nic but he was a cool guy to argue with. The arguments about Shitmano & Campy we had were epic.

I think I held the record for the most amount of "F" bombs thrown into discussions - I suppose I shouldnt brag about it but i've chilled a lot since those days.

One thing i really miss and they should be brought back was our abilty to have a signitures, still think i had one of the coolest signitures here.

Its been a blast and well done to the originators and admins - Still one of the coolest forums to be on

For me, the highlight would be the annual Fantasy TdF competition.
I took it over from Hannes (and a mate of his), in 2009 or 2010.
Like bikehub, it grew better each year until it reaches a peak in 2019.

What was initially just a fun way to enjoy the Tour, turned into a serious competition with prizes up to R70k. @ScottCM was the winner of the Cannondale in one year, which I think was the biggest prize in the competition's history.

It was either 2015 or 2016 where I asked Matt and Nick to assist with the capturing of the names and team lists, as it became an admin nightmare to capture 100 entries, let alone the 658 in 2016. From there, the scoring was handed over to Nick to control/update and eventually I was a participant and no longer an organiser.

My GoogleDrive still has most of the data, but not all. I remember deleting everything from my NAS drive, to free up space for other relevant information from 2024.

2019 was a good year for me, when I finished 2nd, and won a Lazer helmet for my efforts (often spelt helmut in many threads).

What I could find:

I still have hub tor de France competition cycling shirt that I won somehow, with my hub name over the back of the shirt

Also joined in 2009. Was looking for a roadbike to start dabbling in Triathlon - bought a 2004(I think) Raleigh RC8000 from ChunkyMonkey which is now doing duty on the trainer.

I used BikeHub more than Google when I wanted the answer to something😄

Who else still have their original Hub name?

I've been Wannabe since day one.

Was originally BigBen ... A nickname colleagues at work gave me decades ago

Changed it to BigS for a short while when all the 'hate' was going around towards Specialized riders 🤪

And since I haven't been as 'big' as I was in those days changed it to NSBB and it's stuck.... So far

Incredible achievement, well done guys and thank you for such a great platform over the years. You have honestly done and outstanding job and it's much appreciated. Also cool to see my own Username - Buff in the first post clipping of this article. It's evolved to BuffsVintageBikes since then because I forgot my password many years ago during a dry spell of cycling when I went over to racing Offroad Motorcycles but now I'm back and still enjoying BikeHub. 20 years ago was also the first Cape Epic and we discussed that in length on this platform. It was kind of a big deal back then :-) Here's to another 20 great years

I got special permission from Admin to get a duplicate name.

That was 2008 when did a thread called "The Olympic Diaries", which was a spoof of Burry Stander going to Beijing. When it took off he even started sending me extra info to make it more believable.

Congratulations, Matt & Co, for keeping things going. Long may you flourish.

It seems I made it through the nervous nineties of The Hub to sneak in as member No. 100 in 2005. I believe I was pbp2007 from the start, which was a commitment on my part - I did manage to ride Paris-Brest in 2007 to celebrate turning 50.

I have learnt much here over the years. Perhaps the most valuable lesson has been the addition of the word "suurtiet" to my vocabulary. (Thank you, Big H.)

I changed to align with my social media usernames/handles, then changed back; some Hubbers were used to this alias.
