Each registered e-bike rider got this email (CTCT certainly is trying from their side ... if this goes sideways it is going to be due to the individuals who are simply above basic co-operation .... truly pray these riders dont spoil it for the rest of that wont be able to do the event on a normal bike) -

Dear Chris

You have indicated on your entry that you intend to participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour using an e-bike. We are extremely proud to be at the forefront of managing the inclusion of e-bikes as part of a major event. It allows the event to be more inclusive and allow cyclists who may not otherwise be able to participate, the opportunity to be a part of this iconic event.

In the spirit of the event, and as we look to integrate and allow e-bikes the opportunity to participate alongside conventional bicycles, we would ask you to carefully read and consider the following.

We strongly discourage the “racing” of ebikes in the event. The concession to allow e-bikes is based on the premise of participation and NOT racing. Remember that you are not eligible for any positional or age-related prizes.

Be respectful to those who are participating on conventional bikes by not racing uphill but rather enjoy the journey and the camaraderie.

With this in mind, we would like to draw your attention to a few requirements that are specific to e-bikes.

You may not complete the race in under 3:50 (109km) or 1:50 (42km).

You may not, for any portion of the route, ride faster than the speed required to complete the course in 3:50 (or 1:50). You will still face disqualification even if you stop to bring down your average speed.

You may not start before start group 3B if riding an e-bike in the 109km route. There is no start group requirement in the 42km.

You may not use an e-bike that allows the engine to be active at any speed over 25km/h.

For a full set of rules, please see https://ctcttwebdownloads.blob.core.windows.net/singledownloads/CTCTEntryTerms.pdf

Once again we appeal to you to please be considerate when passing other cyclists especially on uphills. Preferably ride at the speed of those around you. The intention is for you to be able to ride with friends and family that you would otherwise not be able to.

We wish you an enjoyable ride on Sunday

Regards
The Cape Town Cycle Tour Team

Taking this one step further ....

3B starts at 7:09.  If you spot an ebike in any earlier group ... PLEASE point this out to any of the CTCT staff.  It is as easy as the staff taking down their race and it is a DQ.

There are some 20 to 25 000 riders .... only a handful of staff .... HELP the staff to weed out (pun intended) these riders that are ruining it for the rest.

Chris, I love your attitude w.r.t eBikes. This is the right way. Unfortunately there is also the few that spoilt it. Like the guy on an eMTB in @ a few years ago who didnt understand why I was...lets say less than friendly...about his presence in a bunch bleeding through the eyeballs.

But Ive also seen how awesome the eBikes are in tje later groups when used at intended by the mail above. Couples riding together having a blast,  granddads with their sons and grandsons, etc. So I fulle support inclusion of eBikes like they are trying to facilitate here. Holding thumbs people keep the their side of the bargain!

At the Herald we at least got a fruit bar, granola bar, nuts, and some Eucerin sunscreen with makeup in it that made for hilarious moments when okes started wiping sweat off their brows...

Same here. Hell, if the wind blows to hard when I wake up, I just might stay in bed with the Missis.
