I reckon we organise a Bikehub group ride and take these assholes out once and for all. I am so sick of reading about this year after year. How on earth the police/law enforcement are unable to do anything about it is ridiculous. 😡

There's "patrols" for like a week max, when **** gets really bad (why does it even take a bad incident for them to do their job) and then it's back to the wild west for months (years) on end.

A group 10 of us got swarmed by about 20 skollies on Strand St on Sunday morning, around 5:30. 2 phones nicked out of jersey pockets, but otherwise no damage, loss or injury.

Keep your eyes open in that part of town. Numbers are clearly not a deterrent.

Is this Strand St by Bo Kaap?

I fully agree with you that something must be done. But escalating things might not be the best option. It may end up with a cycling vigilante being on the wrong side of the law.

It's a crummy predicament, as the law seems to be doing nothing.

Alan Winde always carries on about making Cape Town a "cycling city" - be it for commuting or cycling along our coastline etc. - what are they doing about the escalation of these incidents?

We approach the cycle tour with heightened awareness of the sport - would love to have him and perhaps Bellairs come out and share what their plan is..

This is just ridiculous!

Between the station and the bus terminus.

Weirdly enough we saw him later in the day on the campaign trail and let him know about it - so he is aware of it first hand. He said a few things I'm already aware of about conflict between national and provincial govt on the homelessness and land invasion issues, but they are slowly making progress.

When we went to report it on Monday the sergeant I spoke to said they're using the reported incidents to motivate for removing the squatters, so we'll see how it goes. Sadly it's unlikely to solve the problem, just move it somewhere else.

how do you suggest we do this? dress in camo lycra and skop, skiet and donner everyone on our way to get lattes in Noordhoek?

Exactly.

Or we just accept it and stop cycling where we should be able to.

The shoes are the biggest problem. It's hard to look like you mean business wearing disco slippers.

Follow in the footsteps of DDT and put flats on your gravel bike and ride in 510s......

i thought it was the middle age, propensity for a bierpens and the lycra that is a little too tight and revealing

Are you planning to discipline some vagrants or just happy to see me?

This has to be the same individuals in the four (?) attempts in the last week right?

Would this be a pointless plan... a group cycling followed by a vehicle shadowing them (the criminals clearly don't care if witnesses are around), if they attempt their attack, occupants of the vehicle shoot them with pepper spray projectiles (eg Byrna, cos you don't want to get too close). Should be able to neutralise them and cuff them. Then call the cops to pick them up. GoPros for the evidence of their crimes and through Bike Hub/Strava we have the details of at least three victims who can lay charges. Should be an open and shut case... or am I having an uncharacteristic moment of optimism? Oh wait... why are we doing the job of the police🤬

P.S. re-reading that just made me realise we really are descending into the wild west😔
