News papers are reporting various cycling accidents "over this weekend".  Not sure when the accident happened on Bottelary.  Had it not been for lingering flu symptoms I would have been out on Bottelary myself ....

Let's see if others have more info on the Bottelary accident.

This week, the local cycling community was shattered by the news of at least five incidents that resulted in the death or injury of cyclists in and around Cape Town.
A veteran of many Cape Town Cycle Tours, Dennis Hammer, passed away earlier this week of complications after surgery for injuries that he sustained after an attack in the CBD.
Later on in the week, a bike technician that worked at Olympic Cycles, swerved out to prevent colliding with a car door that was opened in front of him and was hit by a vehicle in Claremont.
Earlier today, there was a collision between three cyclists and a tour bus on Chapmans Peak Drive. One of the cyclists passed away at the scene of the crash whilst the other was airlifted to hospital and the third sustained lesser injuries.
The fourth incident took place along Wellington Road in Durbanville when a cyclist sustained injuries when hit by a truck in a hit and run incident.
The fifth incident was reported to have occurred on Bottelary Road where a vehicle collided with a group of cyclists injuring two.
The PPA wishes to express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the cyclists who lost their lives. We wish those that were injured, a speedy recovery.
We also issue an urgent appeal to all motorists and cyclists to practice caution and respect on our roads so that we never experience a week like this again.

The Bottelary accident happened around 9am. A group of riders, including Hennie (Wiele) Wentzel and Andre (Dippies) Dippenaar and others got clipped by a drunk driver. He hit Piet's bar with his side mirror and the whole lot hit the deck. Wiele has a deep cut in his leg and Dippies was taken to hospital suffering with concussion. The drunk driver tried to make a getaway and was chased by a youngster and his wife in the car behind that witnessed it. They managed to get the car stopped and took away his keys and took him back to the scene. They waited for well over an hour for any cops to arrive on the scene.

Thank you

EDIT - Big thanks to the couple that brought the "gent" back to face the music ...

As a totally aside matter .... MOST of Bottelary (just past the golf course) falls under STELLENBOSCH.  First instincts would be to call Bellville/Brackenfell police, but it is actually Stellenbosch that "should respond" ..... (probably best to report to both)

👋 For what it's worth... didn't think I'd ever be the one posting this, but I was bikejacked outside Cloetesville R44/Fir Street heading into Stellenbosch at around 9:30 this morning. Thankfully, no injuries. 3 young coloured guys ran at me with a big knife. There was no ways I was going to get past them, tried turning around but they were onto me in a flash. I essentially threw my bike to the ground, fearing my life, unfortunately my phone fell out my back pocket. So they got away with that too. A kind lady witnessed it all and drove me to the Cloetesville Police Station. Opened a case, etc. Another couple who also witnessed it actually followed the guys and gave us the approximate streets. Life360, which my wife and I have, had an exact location. SAPS went to the location with law enforcement, but nothing came of it yet. Sad.

So much for all their publicity this week about visible policing, and specifically patrolling this section ....

Had I not not joined a friend on another route I would have been passing through there this morning ....

Thanks man, yeah it really does SUCK.

Worst part (ok, there are plenty but this in response to your comment about their "increased" visibility...) there was a traffic cop in pretty much the exact same spot as the mugging, but on my way out this morning (7:30) and he was doing maintenance on the speed trap/camera that is there... 🙈

No sign of any law enforcement to keep the law abiding cyclists safe. 🥲
